      • New from Ian Rapoport this morning.
Makes no sense from Michigan’s end if this paragraph is true. We can assume Harbaugh hasn’t signed the deal because he’s waiting for 2024 NFL openings. So hypothetically if Harbaugh signs the extension, he THEN couldn’t entertain a job for the 2024 season?! That does absolutely nothing.

If he signed the deal -- which he has not yet done -- Harbaugh would agree not to entertain or accept an NFL job for the 2024 season. The NFL clause would be one season only, but that's apparently been enough to drag out the process.

        • Well, the NCAA wants Harbaugh gone. There's no debate on that. They'd be among the happiest in the room if he gave up and went back to the NFL.

So, knowing this, the problem Harbaugh has, is that the NCAA isn't going to come down with punishment on him until April-May at the earliest. And even at that, there is an appeals process that can push a final decision on back into next season. If its true that he 'has interest' in the Chargers' job, he can't wait for the NCAA to make a ruling, because that opening is going to be gone way before that.

I've heard some haters say that Harbaugh is looking at an additional 1- season suspension, along with recruiting restrictions and maybe even a fine.

So if there is any truth to that, he may decide to bolt, but if he does bolt, he's got to do it soon. Ironically, the one way to make sure he bolts seems to be if he wins a NC. After all 'everyone knows' that Harbaugh longs to go back to the NFL to win a Super Bowl, and his Michigan stint has only been a childhood dream come true. "His heart is in the NFL", according to "everyone who knows him".

                • Yeah, I suspect we'll see movement after we lose the Rose Bowl. Harbaugh will either leave to join the Chargers, or he'll sign his contract extension at M.

                  He's always said he's 'not a quitter', so I guess we'll see.

Latest rumor is if Harbaugh leaves, Brian Kelley may be interested in the Michgan job. Wouldn't that be fun?

                    • Maybe the obvious choice for Lincoln East Hight School, but not a major college program.

                        • Well, Rappaport is just another sports journalist in a long list of them seeking clicks. This story on JH's contract comes up about once a month, nothing happens and it fades into irrelevance until "sources" make some shit up about Jim's contract.

I'm unsure of what the timing of a penalty to be announced by the NCAA might have to do with when Harbaugh would leave for an NFL gig. For example, if he goes to the Chargers before a penalty is announced would the NFL just ignore any penalties announced subsequently? I've heard penalties apply ex post facto and they don't so ????

It appears to me that JH doesn't like a contract that restricts his freedom to act. TBF, that's what contracts do. It's also true that an employee has a right not to sign one that restricts employment options - and I think that sort of thing in contracts has been successfully challenged. But, who wants to sign and then mount a legal challenge to the contract at a later date?

I get why he is holding out on signing when he is facing NCAA penalties and the potential for a Show Cause finding and there is nothing he or the U can do about it. I get why he is holding out. He's done with the BS on sign stealing from Pettiti and the NCAA over burgergate. I also don't think he loves his relationship with Warde and the decision to not pursue a TRO when the argument for one looked strong. I agree with Liney, he's gone after the CFP.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                          • I haven't wanted to believe it but as I've considered the situation, there's no other reason for his delay other than to preserve his option to leave. I'd hoped that he would dig in his heels and stick with Michigan, and fight the NCAA crap, but the longer he goes without signing a GREAT contract, the more I believe he's going to leave.

I wish he'd stay. I'm not ready for a Brian Kelly regime in Ann Arbor yet. In particular because it will cost us Jesse Minter and Sherone Moore. As well as Ben Herbert.
