  • Central Michigan moved up from the "arizona bowl" to the Sun Bowl and it turned out to be a money bonus for them. The "arizona" game was only going to pay out $400K to each team. The Sun Bowl was slated to pay out $4 MILLION to each team, but there is talk that CMU had to take a little less. Still, they got a lot more than the $400K they were originally going to get. And, CMU won the game, which has to help their recruiting.

Its interesting to me that the Sun bowl paid out so much. But, that's the networks for you. That money certainly didn't come from local sources in El Paso.

They probably paid The U an appearance fee, even though they couldn't appear.

        • Blake Corum is taking some static today because as he came off the field last night, he was telling everyone "We'll be back". That's getting a lot of laughs amongst the SEC faithful, as well as opposing Big Ten fans' sites.

I dunno. I think I'd rather have him saying that, than flipping everyone off and dropping f bombs.

          But, that's just me.

Does this mean these kids are special, or do they just not know better?

Maybe they should have been hanging their heads in the locker room with everyone else.

              • You watch too many movies where that is missing is grit and determination. They picked on your corners and destroyed you in the trenches. The latter has happened in pretty much all of these CFP playoff semis.

It reminds me of a story where Nolan Richardson had a very good team that ran into a buzzsaw. As he was losing LJ called out to him on the court and said, "You need to get some grown men if you want to beat us." Eventually the Razorbacks did get some grown men and they won a National Championship. That story applies here, all year the Michigan offensive line looked dominant, yesterday it looked like Pickett's charge. The key picture Daniel Dash needs to post is Harbaugh mastering the transfer portal like Dr. Strange.

                • ....... and optimize NIL.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                  • Again, M isn't going to optimize NIL. I don't think any B10 team will. Ohio State needs to get very aggressive, though. They need to be in the same area code as the Texas schools.

What every school should appreciate is that the NCAA has zero interest in enforcing any sort of NIL rules. It's a complete pay system. Or rather -- and maybe this is a nicer way to put it -- the spirit of NIL is paying players; the technical rules as to when and how that can happen aren't important to the NCAA.

What some schools will do is to try to stay within the technical NIL rules. And they will get obliterated in recruiting.

And then you combine NIL w/ the portal and it's crazy.

                      The perfect summation.

No- it means these are kids (that aren't old enough to rent cars or legally buy beer) reacting to a situation that they haven't experienced before. I honestly turned the station and didn't see the post game (much like I couldn't get out of JLA fast enough after Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup finals), so I would have left the scene too. But I've never been a talented athlete that achieved so much only to get bitterly overrun when heading for the finish line.

These are super talented kids playing their hearts out and they expected better results. Watching the celebration of the players that defeated you might be nothing more than trying to glimpse what's possible.

You don't think OSU will pay? That's rich.

Good post though. What is needed is that the "death penalty" be given to a couple of schools that are cheating. Right now, there is no downside at all, except possibly the coach getting fired.

Tom Brady signed a NIL contract with Cade McNamara. After last night, with JJ looking good, Cade's days are numbered as starting QB at UM.

                          • Ohio State will pay, but whether it's an organized booster slush fund or anywhere close to what aTm and Texas are doing is up for debate. I HOPE so.

And talk about rich...giving the death penalty for paying outside of NIL....that's fucking rich. It's not a conceivable solution because it'll never happen. Ever. So, I'd suggest figuring out alternative solutions. And the reality is that there really aren't none. Full-on pay to play is, by far and away, the most realistic landing place and I think it's already here for some schools.

                            • There's also the practice where players must continue to earn their scholarships by performance, or risk losing them. Some schools will not guarantee a players' scholarship for the full four years. They only pay them out one year at a time. If the player under performs, they can lose their scholarship by "not having it renewed". This is a common practice south of the Mason Dixon line, including the opponent that Michigan played on Friday. This is another reason why those schools can sign 25-30 players every year, because some of those scholarships aren't 'renewed'. Michigan and others have no such luxury. They are pretty much stuck with everyone that signs a LOI until they either portal out, leave early or graduate. I have no idea what OSU does.

I'm not sure where Michigan is going to end up in all this. They certainly have the resources to take advantage of every loophole the NCAA allows, but I'm not sure they'll take advantage of it. They could end up in the thick of any new alignment, or they could opt out. I have no idea.

RE: that picture of those kids following the game: I hope it means that they're setting the goal of "that's going to be us". But, maybe they were just checking out the chicks.

                              • Processing out players isn't THAT common. It happens. But, it's not like it's some huge problem. HARBAUGH!!!! does it, too. There's zero doubt about that. The conversation is always this: "you'll never play here...think about your options..." -- most kids want to play somewhere. And with the portal it's now supereasy to do that.

HARBAUGH!!!!'s first two classes were 27 and 30 (I think) as he, ummmm, noted to certain Hoke players that they might not play there.

But, overall, with the portal I think turnabout is fair play. Honestly, they probably need to turn the scholarships into a contract of some sort. Let the kids/schools decide if they want to make it 1, 2, 3, 4 years...but whatever the term, no processing, no portal. I mean, CFB is on the precipice of pure professionalism, we might as well take the baby step to formalize it.
