The maths are going to be a problem - i.e. how many games do you expect these kids to play?
To have a 16 team playoff mean you need to be playing the ENTIRE month of December to settle it
They already play 13 game regular seasons.....
If you shorten the season to accomodate that long of a playoff - you will lose FAR, FAR more revenue than you'd ever hope to gain by expanding the playoff.
If you don't, you got these kids playing NFL schedules - better pay them accordingly.

    • ....... definitely lots of obstacles in the face of well entrenched positions across the entirety of CFB.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

      • The bowls still carry a lot of thump because of $$$. The networks still love the bowls, and love pumping TV money into them. As long as the TV money is there, the bowls will be with us.

Not in the current format that's been with us since God only knows and they barely held on and are continuing to struggle to hold on to, their share of the pie after the BCS then CFP became a part of CFB.

          • Maybe SOME bowls will be around...and they will continue to incorporate the bowls into the playoff structure probably. But the days of the Mayo and Tax Slayer Bowls are numbered. When attendance is as pathetic as it is and players opting out...and a playoff system in place...it will get even more pathetic.

            • Cap conference games at 8. 1 preseason game that counts...then 3 ooc games. There is 12 regular season games. CCG is 13...so yes you COULD play 17...but hell some are playing 15 now. Only 2 would play 17 potentially. Let's face it. This is a business. BIG business. Multi BILLION dollar business.

Like these kids go to school for an education. Lol.

              • Actually, the shitty bowls will continue. Because ESPN needs live content. And the shitty bowls fill a big need from roughly December 16 to December 30. What are they gonna do? Put college basketball on? LOL.

The bowls are pure TV commodities -- or pure ESPN commodities and ESPN doesn't really care if people are in the stands. They'll pay enough to make sure they games get on the air.

Being with us and having any meaning are two different things. They have destroyed the meaning of most of these games.
Players today routinely do the unthinkable 30 years ago - they sit them out.
Why? Because the game means NOTHING anymore in the grand scheme of things.
I'll be honest. I'd be extremely interested in the OSU v Utah game today - because I'd like to see if Utah can smack OSU in the mouth.
I'm not, because OSU isn't anywhere close to fielding their best team with all their opt-outs.

                  • As more and more players opt out...and that will get worse before it gets better...bowls will die...content or no content. No one wants to watch a fucking meaningless scrimmage on a Wednesday night in the middle of fucking December. Yes I'd rather watch a fucking hoops game than Eastern Michigan vs. Coastal Carolina...

                        • Chasing more $$$ is as old as college football itself. This is a Michigan forum and the foundation of the Michigan football tradition is based on some.old dude's idea to build a 100k seat stadium at the turn of the century to chase loads of money. The idea was.an unqualified success, they chased and caught all kinds of greenbacks.

The current structure is here to stay, the future is more bowls and not less. Any bowl that packs it in is replaced in a New York minute. Hopefully, the playoffs expand more.to create a more NFL type system.

A lot of the caterwauling about the state of college football and specifically the bowls depends on how you finish the season and your place on the mountain. Michigan fans would complain a little less about the system if they won yesterday and talent will be a little happier than his public stance if they are once again Rose Bowl champs. I myself will be celebrating a hard fought Peach Bowl championship and a great Sun Bowl Championship. The secret to the enduring survival of the bowl system is it combines the first week of the Basketball tournament and the fun of a participation trophy. 50 teams finish the season with a smile on their face and a I Tried trophy.

                            • The bowls are still important for teams that have no shot at the playoffs and for the cities that host them. The economic impact to a city like Mobile or Birmingham or even Orlando and Tampa is significant, even with sparse attendance.

The major bowls lost their luster unless they are a part of the playoff a long time ago. The minor bowls are the same as it ever was.

Of course a Nebraska fan is going to want to watch anything but college football in December.
