  • FOX is horrible. Try working with FOX in a replay booth...oye...

Fucktards. I realize this is a profit thing ( as Navin R. Johnson pointed out in The Jerk)...but they really don't give a shit about the quality of the broadcast...it's about squeezing every last penny out...

    • In the CCG last night, Iowa and Michigan didn't cooperate very well with Fox, chewing up most of the 3rd period and leaving no time for Fox to get in all of its commercial spots. Viewers paid for it at the beginning of the 4th when Fox made up for the lost commercial breaks with about 12 minutes of commercials and abour 3 minutes of game play.

We could do a whole thread on this subject. I could rant longer than Jeff on how CFB games are produced, but I'll save that for another day. Off season is coming, after all...

        • Yes, FOX is terrible. I've said it for years. For some reason they think that we would rather see a shot of the band, the coach, or the close up of a player's face than the end of a play. They are in such a hurry to cut away to get their "look at the how great the game atmosphere is" shot that many times they have missed action that is still taking place on the field. I have seen them cut away so quickly that they have missed a fumble and recovery. And no, seeing it on instant replay after we get a shot of three idiots in team colored suspenders is not the same. The onslaught of commercials is just icing on the cake

There isn't anything that we can do about it, but it is maddening.

          • What plays/replays did Fox miss against Iowa? I don't remember them blatantly not showing any replays, etc. I like their occasional use of the camera that hangs right past the LOS and does a great job of capturing runs up the middle.

Right after the Edwards to Wilson TD, they had a great close up shot of a dejected Iowa fan. Heh. I actually kind of like it.

THAT play, for example. The "replay" was just of of Edwards throwing it to Wilson. They completely ignored the initial toss to Edwards. But hey, the "atmosphere" described everything that we wanted to know- except for the gender of Jenny Taft's baby. That had to be revealed.

To me, the quick cuts away from the game to their "atmosphere" crap is the worst of their bullshit. There are many times that things are still happening on the field but they cut away so quickly that you don't see it. I would rather see the emotion of the players after a big play in context of that play than some shot of a dejected fan.

And don't get me started on the shot of a closeup of a football flying through the air on a pass or a punt...

This is part of the reason that I like to watch group of 5 games on ESPN+. They have fewer cameras so they are forced to have wider angles and focus more on the game. Fewer commercials and a much faster game. Even though they have the D list announcers It makes for a much better viewing experience

                • I do get what you guys are saying, but I still think that Disney/ESPN wins when it comes to overall buffoonery and shitting up the game.

I think it's the "All-American girl Jenny Taft", sir.

                    • Careful there - most of us would get fired, or worse (get sent to diversity and inclusion training), for saying that.

                        Not Gus Johnson though.

                        • I think the problems for Fux involve the production department. There has to be a lack of experience/expertise in producing a CFB game broadcast.

I've actually been inside a production van - a long time ago but still..... Its chaotic. The producer and maybe one assistant sits at a console where he has screens to view all his cameras and connections to the camera men or to the overhead camera that there is probably another assistant controlling that. He has sets of commercials cued up on another screen. There are more assistants that connect with the broadcast booth and on-field reporters. So there is a production team in the van.

It takes a ton of skill and experience to produce a program that flows seamlessly. That's more an artistic skill but the technical skill of getting the camera shots the producer wants, cutting to them at the right time then integrating commercial breaks from his cue of those plays a major role and that's where I think Fux's problem is. Scrimping on good producers and assistant producers to save a dime. Good ones are hard to find and command big bucks.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                          • No.

Fox has enough experience and expertise to get this right. Their NFL broadcasts aren't perfect, but they're light years ahead of where they are with the College game.

The problem might be that, instead of following the lead of their NFL broadcasts, they're using the same production mindset that they use for LegoMasters and the Masked Singer.

                            • As nauseating as Gary Danielson can be at times, I've always thought CBS broadcasts looked the best. I prefer them over Fox for the NFL too.
