  • No, I have never heard of that as a middle finger. I had another sentence I was going to compose and I hit post before composing. Quit being paranoid, give me a break, I have no qualms about telling someone to eff off when they deserve it. I'm not going to speak in some alleged teenage code.

      • You would think that Michigan, with all of the money that it brings in to the Conference, would be able to have some influence on the competency of the officials. Maybe?

I'm not even asking for M to have influence.

Just give us 50/50. Don't micro-officiate them, .. don't let them get away with murder. When Michigan games are officiated the officials should only see two teams, with no names.

            I don't think that's asking too much.

When I see bad officiating against Michigan I wish that JUST ONCE Harbaugh would get himself tossed out of a ballgame. Go absolutely freaking nuclear. Get double flagged and tossed. It would at least be better than that lost in space gaze that he typically shows. At least it would show some life, and that he actually cares.

He just about did that much after the screw job in Columbus in 2016. That the higher ups in the University (allegedly) told him to stand down instead of backing him is telling.

              • BronxBlue writes a piece at mgo titled Best and Worst. His B&W for MSU puts a lot of things in perspective. It's long and has a good bit of fluff but he puts some objective numbers on the "bad calls" by the referees and notes that in 6 booth reviews, all of them went in favor of MSU. The worst being the strip-sack-fumble-TD. Was this bad reversal of a play called in real time as an M TD critical to M's loss? Probably not as events following that right before the half happening were overcome by what happened in the 2nd half. Lots of other good stuff in the piece including that M's offensive performance against a P5, top 10 ranked team and as measured by total yards was the best in the Harbuagh era.

Other than that he points out this was a competitive game played between two very good football teams where the outcome is binary - one team has to win. He also points out that the line, football teams can't win by making "a lot of mistakes," he points out that MSU did exactly that.

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

                • I can't recall all of the other 5 booth recalls, but I thought they were all correct. The Reeds catches were absolutely catches. The strip-sack fumble was the only one that was wrong. That was worth anywhere from 0, 1 or 4 points for Sparty, with 4 being far most likely.

                    Correct.

I think the author's point was that the BT in particular tends to defer to and rely upon booth reviews too often instead of letting the call on the field determine the result of the play in question. The end result is that the game ends up being influenced if not determined by officiating in an outsized way. My reading of the piece where it dealt with the officiating seemed to be dismissive of fan complaints that M lost the game on bad officiating but pointed, in general, to what has become a real problem in the BT......over reliance on booth reviews.

                      • The strip/fumble was bad. I also think the refs swallowed their whistle on a couple of late PIs, but in the officiating spectrum (Excellent-Good-Average-Bad-Horrible-SEC), this was a solid “average”.

From a play calling perspective, I hated the tendency to go for 30-yard fades on 3rd and 2 and 4th and short on a regular basis. You just need a 1st down. A short screen, a slant, a button hook, or a short yardage cross are all significantly higher % passes if the defense is loading the box than a medium to long fade. He has some capable receivers out there but he doesn’t have a Jerry Jeudy like he did at Alabama.

Any game where you are up 16 points late in the third quarter is extra salt on the wound.

                        • Mgoblog with the "it was a great game" defense.

It was "great" for one team, and that's not Michigan. Even if it was true, nobody cares that Michigan "played a great game"

That ranks right up there with moral victories, which this was not.

Instant replay was instituted to correct obvious errors. It was never intended to be used as a tool to micro-officiate. But, today its the latter.

The booth official should ask only one question while reviewing: Was a mistake made in the call on the field? Is there obvious evidence that an officiating mistake was made on the field? If yes, fix it. If no, leave it alone. On the strip/sack/fumble/TD the ball was coming out as soon as the QB was hit. It was obvious in the review, and if we were talking about a catch, that would have been enough to call it incomplete, according to the rules. But, since this was MSU, and they needed to be bailed out of a tough spot, the QB was ruled "down" by the replay official, because his calf touched the ground while the ball was in his crotch. "Good job" boys. And I hope that at some point in the remainder of this foolish season, that Michigan is allowed to have a pass completion where Michigan's receiver is allowed to use the ground to control the ball. It won't happen, of course, but I think Michigan is owed the same consideration.

The biggest problem Michigan has is sitting in the office of the Head Coach today, and he's being enabled by the Athletic Director. It doesn't help when the zebras decide to heap their attention on Michigan, and bury their flags for the opponent, which has happened way too often.

Lets see Michigan vs Florida again in Tampa!!!!! Go Blue!!!!!!

                          • Absolutely nobody complains when the replay overturns a call in their favor.

I like to joke about the typical M vs Florida Gators bowl game, but Florida keeps losing. Seems like M is destined to win 10 games. Slight possibility of 11.
A fun bowl matchup would be vs Notre Dame. Not sure how it can happen... that's what I want.
