I think most coaches use a spy defense when the QB is prone to scrambling, rather than read-option. The RO offense makes the QB a running threat, and he has to be treated the same as you would any other RB. A scrambling QB usually wants to sit in the pocket and throw, but will take off when he gets in trouble. He'd prefer not to run, but he can.
I think JJ is a QB who is not really a RO guy, but he is a QB that can run if need be. I'm not sure what McNamara is yet. He doesn't seem to be comfortable as a drop back, and he doesn't have blazing speed either. He's kind of just a guy that takes the snap and hands it off, or throws the ball.

A strength of the M defense is how they have speed in the front 7 and at nickel CB (Dax Hill). It all depends on how Macdonald calls the defensive game plan. If M wants to take away the QB scrambles, M is capable of doing it.
Macdonald coached against Lamar Jackson in practice for a couple years… you’d think he knows something about defending it.
David Ojabo for example. He is coming a long as the next good speedy outside LB like Josh Ouche.
This isn’t 2005 when M’s defense went up against the mobility of Vince Young in the Rose Bowl. OR even how slow Brady Hoke’s defenses were in the early to mid 2010s.
The risk in a McDondald strategy that dials back the DE's pressure (make sure their primary focus is on containing Martinez) is that your relying on the back end to deliver coverage that, when Martinez pulls it out of the backs arms and sets up to pass it looks to Martinez like nothing is open and he pulls it down and starts scrambling. It's then that a LB has to step up and nail him. From watching him and his receivers, they're both good, in Martinez's case, at finding an open guy, and in the case of receivers, getting open after the original good coverage breaks down. LB tackling has to be quick and decisive. Every time you fail to keep him between the tackles, you lose. I give Ross a good grade in doing this.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
Y'all are overthinking this. You should be more concerned about scoring on our D...it is legit. Special teams suck but looks like we've shored up a few holes we had. The OL has been a concern but it looked much better last week against a pretty stout DL. But regarding AMart...force him to throw deep...he can't do it consistently...although we are stacked with very good recievers and TE's. I don't think we have a good enough ground game to pound it all nite either. I think we'll hit a few big plays...AMart will get loose a couple times...be close at half...like 17-14...M will have a small lead going to the 4th...20-17ish...then you'll break it open late...34-17 final.
I do know this...it's gonna be probably the loudest crowd we've had in decades. Night games are nuts in LNK...and we don't lose at night in LNK very often. Beware our 3rd/4th qtr transition...THUNDERSTRUCK with the light and fire show...ala jump around. Crowd is gonna be insane. But talent will win out.
Jeff, I'm not committed to a Michigan loss. I'd put it at about 60/40 Nebraska, maybe a little more. We'd win at home and probably on a neutral field but those night road games against a decent team with an amped up crowed are traditionally horror shows for Michigan.

This is my biggest concern. I think the D can do a good enough job if they aren't totally gassed by the mid-3rd quarter. If Nebraska leads the game in TOP, they will win. The M offense has to move the ball both on the ground, and in the air. Mix up the plays, don't let them bullrush the passer, and don't let them gang up on the run. Be unpredictable, and when the receivers are actually open, give them catchable passes. They aren't going to put up 200 yards rushing against the Huskers, so don't even plan on that. Its got to be a balanced game, or they're cooked.
I'll still go with the Huskers winning by 7. Michigan is a horrible night game road team.

It's not so much "sandbagging" as it is "waiting for the other shoe to fall"- as it has virtually every single time since 2007 (and, arguably, even before that). It might be a slight exaggeration, but just when you think Michigan is going to finally get it's act together and make a statement like winning the Conference, getting credit for beating ohio or coming up with a big bowl win, they crap the bed. Other B10+, not just OSU, can at least claim some of these.
1. Michigan has superior talent.
2. Michigan has (slightly) better coaching.
3. Michigan has already won in Madison...Lincoln won't faze them.
4. Michigan did not lose to Bert.
