  • Harbaugh goes back to his brother for help again. Baltimore RBs coach Matt Weiss is leaving to become the Wolverines QBs coach. I have to think John Harbaugh thinks these guys will do well at Michigan. Weiss has led the NFL’s No. 1 rushing attack under John Harbaugh, now will coach QBs under Jim Harbaugh. The two were together at Stanford.

And possibly a dick move by LB coach Brian Jean-Mary leaving for Tennessee at this time of the year? He interviewed with UFM last week, so he wanted out (or was forced out?)

In Year 7 of Jim Harbaugh's tenure, Michigan football is officially rebuilding

Why Joe Milton's transfer stings worse than others under Harbaugh

      • Well, it's a pretty accurate account of where M football is under JH. So, I can't complain about it. I could probably rationalize the 10 scholarship players entering the transfer portal but that is still reflective of the chaos that has been the coaching staff's player recruiting and development under Harbaugh.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

        • But I have to say, which of the players that have transferred via the portal, have gone on to great things at their new school? About the only one I can think of that has done anything decent so far would be Tariq Black at Texas. I can' t think of anyone that has left under Harbaugh, that has gone on to be better than they were at Michigan. Most are still buried on their new teams' rosters. The Freep is making a big deal out of Harbaugh losing Milton, but what did Milton do, to indicate that losing him would be a disaster for Michigan? If any transfer has the potential to come back and bite Harbaugh in the arse, its probably McCaffery. He's going to go play for his dad at N. Colorado, and likely be the starter from day one. He showed a lot of promise while at Michigan, and that could be one that Harbaugh will later regret. But other than that, I can't think of any transfer portal player that has left and gone on to great things at their new school.

And this isn't an apology for Harbaugh. He and his staff have mucked up Michigan football so badly, that none of them should be employed on State Street today, IMO. The house should have been cleaned before Christmas. But, Manuel didn't have the guts to pull the trigger.

          • The larger issue with Harbaugh is roster management and the transfers are reflective of that issue and that's regardless of whether or not they excelled at another program. In JH's tenure at M he's missed out on elite difference makers in a period of college ball that that makes a big difference in a teams competitiveness. The results on the field suggest poor player development of what he did get. What he defaulted to was a diamonds in the rough recruiting strategy that failed due in large part to coaches and schemes requiring talent, either developed or innate, that wasn't there. Then no adjustments to accommodate for that putting players and the team in a position to fail. Surprise, that happened. HARBAUGH!!!!

            • Milton came to Michigan because they gave him a opportunity at QB and told him they wouldn't move him. He was offered by other college programs, but wanted to move him to TE. McCaffery is very disappointing to me , there were rumors he was held out of practice last year b/c of his concussions and was not happy at all. I thought McCaffery would win the job at some time, but bad luck and injury's done him in. He is damaged goods now IMO with 2 serious concussions and 2 injuries with limited snaps. Going back to play at home with his dad as the coach so will be interesting to see how he does not going up against top talent or a top conference that has more of a wide open type of offenses in that conference. Also the other brother McCaffery has left Nebraska as well.

                  Um.... no.

Sandbaggery should be saved until July at earliest.

Michigan will be over achieving if they finish 3rd in the BTE. OSU and PSU are clearly ahead of them, and Indiana served notice last season that they are for real. I doubt Michigan will get past any of those three.

                  • We'll be last in the B1G East unless we beat MSU, which is a 50/50-ish game.

                    • I don’t know about last but I don’t see us winning more than 3 or 4 conference games. We’re clearly in the lower strata reserved for Indiana and Maryland.

We had to pull out a miracle against Rutgers last year. That’s our “level”.

                      • Lost this weekend in the success of Juan Howard and M basketball is the departure of M football's LB coach, Jean-Mary and rapid fire hiring of Matt Weiss from the Raven's staff as M's new QB coach. Nick Baumgardner reports ....

”Can confirm that Michigan is expected to move Ron Bellamy to the defensive side (safeties) and move George Helow to LBs after hiring Ravens assistant Matt Weiss as QB coach. First reported by 247. Bellamy, a former U-M WR, joined staff this year after leading West Bloomfield HS to a state title. OC Josh Gattis coached WRs last season and can again.

Reading about this at mgoboard, there are two views: (1) its reflective of the continuing cluster fuck Harbaugh has brought to M football. (2) Encouraging fresh start with young blood. Continuing what has been a monumental shift in the mood at mgo, view (1) predominates.

My take is that the hiring of Weiss, who has worked for JH in the past at Stanford and was most recently with brother John on the Raven's staff, tells us a lot about the football fraternity that prevails in that sport. Jim isn't necessarily hiring the best and brightest coaches, he's filling holes created by staff unexpectedly bailing and furthering the nepotism that has hurt the program for the last 15-20 years. Nothing to see here except chaos, IMO.

                        • It's probably next to impossible to attract high quality coaches to join a sinking ship. He has to go the buddy route. Come in and make a decent buck next year while lining up another gig for 2022.

                          • Bells gets the DBs. Gattis gets receivers. A shuffling of 4 position coaches, a month after announcing the staff, and the day prior to spring practice. Position coaches being moved around the weekend before practice starts, coaching positions they’ve never coached before, let alone at this level, all while playing catch-up in an off season. Can’t imagine where we’d be without the Raven’s leftovers. House of cards

IIRC, the NCAA allows teams to have 20 Spring sessions starting today and ending sometime in April. I seem to remember that the sessions have a time limit as well. (3 hours?)

Michigan usually spreads out the sessions over a few weeks, and ends in early April.

Doesn't matter. Its like putting custom chrome wheels on a Yugo.
