“From source: If conference can pass updated safety measures and procedures, Big Ten targeting Oct. 10 to start football season.” - Dan Patrick
They'll have to do it without M and MSU. There's no freaking way that Whitmer is going to allow M and MSU to play that early. There's <50% chance that she will allow them to play a "Thanksgiving week start", and probably the same percentage for a January start. She has killed football for at least this calendar year in Michigan.

There could be some movement on her part if other states in the region with Democratic governors try to nudge her in that direction. She won't listen to a Republican about how to make a pot of coffee, much less starting a football season.

      • There’s no way they get to 9.

Infuriating. Because they voted in August they need 9 now. If they voted today they’d only need 6 to stop the bullshit, which they have.

        INFURIATING.

          • The consequences of this unfortunate decision are beginning to show. Warde Manuel laid off 21 AD staffers and they have 15 open positions as the result of a previous hiring freeze. I’ll be the first to admit that there’s a lot of dead weight/empty suits in these big time ADs, but it’s still 36 good paying jobs that no longer exist. Extrapolate that across the conference and you’re talking about several hundred jobs and many athletic programs cut.

            • Amazing this is landing at the feet of Gov Whitmer, when the simple truth is had the work been done months and months ago (but people proved to be unwilling in that regard for whatever reason) I would say there would be a better than 50% chance that we could have CFB in Big 10 and Pac 12 country.

              But that did not happen.

              • This may be a really dumb question so forgive me, but is Whitmer's ruling just against them playing in the state of Michigan? Could they get around it by playing their "home" games somewhere else? Didn't the Blue Jays do this and play their home games in Buffalo?

Yet despite the clusterfuck early on in the pandemic, we’re still in a position where football among the healthiest people on the planet could be played in empty stadiums. The current data indicates that athletes participating in their team’s Covid protocols are at significantly lower risk of catching Covid-19 than the rest of the student body. These universities (for the most part) had no problem inviting 40,000 students back to campus! Let them play their sport.

                  • Yeah, high school kids are playing everywhere. And yet Governor Whitmer had no choice.

Own the fucking decision. She made it. Own it. Others went the other way and things blow up on them then they’ll own. Trying to pass off a horrible decision on “people” is shameful.

Again, I’ve yet to hear a literate, rational reason as to why the decision had to be made when it was. It’s mind-blowingly stupid.

You can have high contact sports if you are playing in the bubble. The NBA and NHL are done a wonderful job of it. MLB has not. It remains to be seen if the NFL can.

The other deal is that are you really going to have college kids (who are not getting paid and making the universities lots of money) be locked down 24/7? Taking virtual classes, no one not associated directly with the sport/AD office allowed in? That is what is going to have to be done. It is an incredibly bad bad look.

                      • Kids and their parents are leading the charge to get the B10 to reconsider their idiocy. But, yeah, it’s impossible.

I guess I’ll have to settle for watching Ohio high school football on TV. Somehow they’ve figured out the impossible.

                          • Look, you don't get COVID from touching, at least not at the rate it was believed to be 6 months ago, Whitley. In fact, infection from touching a surface contaminated with live virus is unlikely. The primary mode of transmission is airborne particles from respirations..... and even then, a lot of perfect shit has to happen for an infection to occur. Then, in the case of football, you've got 18-22 year olds that have what, a less than 1% chance of being hospitalized for COVID related issues.

I get the argument that % positivity should be less than 5% to prove that community spread is limited. But wait, have I made the argument that the data sucks for a thousand reasons and yet we're making mitigation decisions often on just the basis of that data point alone? No context? I think I have.

Oh, wait again, the players will breath heavily on each other. Can't have that. Might catch COVID. I'm not even going down tht rabbit hole. Been there done that.

If Liney is calling it correctly, and I have no reason to believe he's not, THIS IS 100% on Whitmere ignoring the science not on some notion that the "people" didn't pay attention and that's why we can't play football. That's non-sense. You and Rob should get together and share your thoughts on COVID risks. You two will agree with each other.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
