  • FFS why did Beilein take that NBA job? When he had the program humming along? Beilein finally had a machine with a solid recruiting pipeline for guys who fit our program and could play basketball, and now we no longer do.

    • The prevailing wisdom is that he went to the NBA because he was sick of the endless recruiting cycle. I think Iggy leaving after 1 season was the last straw for him. Point being, if he hadn't left before NIL and unlimited free agency, he certainly would have called it quits by now. We probably would have had another 2 or 3 good years, though.

      • Beilein would have been a great coach for this era, precisely because he rarely got the one-and-dones, but by the end of his tenure, he was geting tons of Teske, Lives, and Zavier types -- good program guys.

He was terrible at recruiting for his first few years and there was a big dropoff after that 2012 class for a few more, but there was a big turnaround in that area late in his Michigan tenure.

        • Beilein kind of guys might have been out the door even faster than the guys transferring under Juwan. Geezer has it -- Michigan has to get with the times on NIL.

          • It's not an either or tpe of deal. You need the one or two and dones because they are the elite talent. But you also need the program guys that stay for 3-4 years.

I've been wondering that myself. Maybe the thought of leading an NBA team to a title had some attraction to it. It really shouldn't have been money, because UM was paying him well.

I think if you could get Beilein over a cold adult beverage, and ask him "why?", he'd probably agree that he shouldn't have done it.

It might have been something like this: 1) He was/is very good at teaching the game especially to young players (which Cleveland had a lot of), 2) Never coaching at that level and this being his last chance to do so and 3) Would not have to deal with recruiting and would be dealing with guys that are dedicated to being basketball players 24/7 no rules about can only coach so many hours a week. 4) His type of basketball (knocking down threes, running when you can and overall more open game while limiting turnovers) was/is in vogue in the NBA.

                • He's said it unambiguously. He saw the portal coming and didn't like it. Was already dealing with too many early entries and frustrated with that. I think he regrets what happened to him in Cleveland, but I don't think he regrets leaving the college game. Which is definitely frustrating, because I thought he was on the right path and was going to get one.

                  • Hunter Dickerson revealed on the Roundball podcast, that he made less than 6 figures at Michigan from NIL and was getting a significan incease to go to Kansas. He also said that he loved UM basketball a ton and that is why it was such a difficult decision for him to leave

                    • We've gotta get with the times. It's not as if the money wouldn't be there if we had the infrastructure in place.

                      • Michigan has gotten the top in state recruit for 2024 PG 6'2 Durral Brooks . He is a 4 star rectuit and ranked as #101 in the 2024 class.

                              • Caleb Love decommitted because he could not qualify for admission to Michigan.

He will likely make more elsewhere.
