  • Friends and I just saw Oppenheimer. It was enjoyable. Some historical flaws, but well done.

          • Also, Cillian Murphy is gonna win an Oscar for Oppenheimer. He’s gotta be the odds-on fav.

            • I've heard people saying possibly same for Robert Downey Jr.

                • It was a stellar cast. Really could have had a bit bigger roles from some. Gary Oldman as Truman was just a bit part. There are a couple of others that seemed like they needed some more screen time.

And there are no melting Japanese people in this (which I expected). There were some brief melting audience members in a dream/vision he had of him giving a speech, but despite very much being an anti-apocalyptic war and the inherent dishonesty/duplicitous nature of governments, it was gore-free.

                  • Late October/November will have big Oscar bait contenders. Killers of the Flower Moon, Dune 2, and Napoleon.

                      • I saw Oppenheimer with my wife and my son yesterday. It's -- okay? Great acting from most of the cast. Great music and mood. But three hours -- I mean, yeesh. It's a long-ass movie and I was looking at my watch 45 minutes into it. The movie is roughly one third A-bomb stuff, one third Cold War politics, and one third character development/personal stuff. The first two are really good. The last part is -- pretty bleh. It also has the most unnecessary sex scene of all time and if there has ever been a movie that should have been edited to get from R to PG-13, this would be it.

                          • The trend to take longer and longer to tell stories that shouldn't be more than 2 hours is really suckass. I've read that it's pretty good if you understand that historical accuracy isn't it's chief objective -- and, really, when you do a movie on a single person, that person typically becomes the heroes and all those against him become villains when, most often, it's way more complex (as was the case with Oppenheimer).

But, the time is ridiculous. Disney pumping the Little Mermaid to 2:30 was maybe the most obscene time suck of the year, but it's happening with most films and it sucks.

                            • Any period-piece or biographical drama I think you kind of have to expect 2 hours minimum.

I didn't realize the new Mermaid was THAT long. That's an hour longer than the original ffs.

                              • Yeah. For a kid's movie.

And there's a big difference between say 2:10 and 2:45.

I dunno. Maybe every scene advances the story. I sort of doubt it, but you never know.
