If Barbie is a success (and I tend to think it will be) Mattel is already rumored to be preparing bullshit movies based on other brands they own.

      • I think they brought back the old characters for nostalgia and to help box office, sure, but it was a changing of the guard. Rey was the new Luke. Finn and Poe were an amalgam of the new Han. Kylo was the new Vader. BB-8 was the new C3PO. Snoke was the new Palpatine. Etc, etc. For an ongoing serials, there is a certain logic to it.

That already happened 20 years ago and it starred Rachel Leigh Cook in her smokin' hot days.

They HAD to bring back Princess Leia. The fanboy obsession with Carrie Fisher is one of filmdom's greatest legends.
That they brough her back even after she died, as essentially a zombie, only added to her legend.

              • Now that I think about it they probably WILL do a Josie & The Pussycats reboot. AND the original three, Rachael, Tara Reid (ugh), and Rosario Dawson will be back too as their parents or some dumb shit and encourage their daughters to form a band. Win the rock contest, save the rec center. HIRE ME, HOLLYWOOD

                  • Luke at 70 shouldn't act & talk the same as at age 30. I don't like The Last Jedi but at least it TRIED to do something different. Failed in most ways but at least it's trying to do something original.
No, but he doesn't have to be a bitter old man. He could be full of wisdom and ready to share it young jedi like, oh, I don't know...Obi Wan.

TLJ was trash. Maybe you want something "different" -- but most Star Wars fans are sort of loyal to story. Most Star Wars fans aren't like, "man, those first 3 were rubbish, we need a complete remake."

Like I said, Tom Cruise knows what Disney does not. I can guaran-goddamn-fucking-tee you that he ain't gonna be some washed up get off my lawn old man in MI7 and that MI7 ain't going to be like, "fuck it, this franchise sucks, we gotta do something different."

Yeah, we disagree. I mean really, really disagree.

The RoS is not good -- a giant arbitrary quest with a ton of bullshit and, of course, the invincible Rey. But, really, after Admiral Holdo single-handedly renders all military tactics in the previous 7 episodes null and void, then why even bother with 9. The writing was so inexplicably awful in TLJ -- even by Disney standards -- that I don't blame you for not watching RoS. But, hey -- at least they tried something different...because that's what franchises do!

                    Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

                      • Also, there wasn't much need to bring back Solo. I do very much think the Luke-Rey dymnamic and ultimate passing of wisdom and the torch could have given Rey gads of credibility and sent Luke out on the note he deserves. But, you know -- that was never gonna happen.

                        • I generally agree with Taleht. I would also add that Disney got the Obi-Wan series mostly right, but even with that it was hit and miss. Some head-scratching plot arcs and other silliness.

                          Again, another prequel series.

Rey as the new Luke and Luke as the new Obi-Wan would have worked. I think the writers get so wrapped up in making it “theirs” and don’t want critics to say “it’s the same movie just the character names have changed”.

                            • Luke teaching Rey in a combo Obi-Wan and Yoda role coulda been fun and would have given the old heads the nostalgia and the newbies something “new”.

                              • And the “invincible Rey” is correct. Her as an untrained Jedi and neophyte to the force essentially kicking Kylo Ren’s ass was pretty bad. Almost like they wanted to extol the power of women and have her become some irresistible force (get it??). It was too much.

At least have her get zapped in the ass a few times by the lightsaber training drones.
