Besides that I think it strikes me as a very 80's movie in a way The Thing does not. Could just be superficial reasons, the fashion, being set in Miami, and all the cocaine, making me say that.
I saw it when it came out and didn't think much of it. Have not seen it since. It seemed to be too much of a Miami Vice type vibe. Move along, nothing to see here.
I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on

That's true for a ton of old stuff. Star Wars especially.

The movie does have 80s aesthetics, but the story is timeless.

I find that going back and picking up classics a long time after they come out almost never produces the same love for a movie as seeing it when it's new. I have seen a lot of old, very highly regarded movies this way and with a few exceptions, I was usually left thinking "what was so great about that"?

It doesn't help that usually the people who recommend the movie to you probably oversell it. I've probably been guilty of that with The Thing. There's something about not knowing what the hell to expect out of a movie and being pleasantly surprised that really sticks with you.

My dad thought that The French Connection was da bomb. I watched it for the first time two or three years ago and I thought it was utter shit.
All correct- Coincidentally, I watched French Connection a few weeks ago and, yeah, it was garbage. I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest a while back. It was trash as well.

Jaws, however, is still as awesome as it was when I saw it the theater when I was 10. And it was PG.
Agree that the Thing is timeless.
A personal favorite, and mostly forgotten film is To Live In and Die in L.A. Very 80's with a Wang Chung soundtrack, but pretty good.

          • My brother and sister-in-law absolutely love Jaws and we rewatch it almost once a year when I visit in the summers. Definitely another in the "timeless" category.

Watched and read Cuckoo's Nest in high school. Haven't seen it in years but I recall liking it. I saw French Connection for the first time in my life just a few years ago. I didn't think it was bad per se but definitely came away feeling "what's the big deal?". Good chase scene though.

William Friedkin directed that and To Live and Die in LA and he learned a LOT in the 14 years between them. The latter is grittier and has an even better chase scene, IMHO.

              • I do like Jaws OK but that’s another one that is tough to appreciate outside of its original context.

                • The French Connection is held in high regard because it was a pioneer in that kind of movie. Popeye Doyle is sort of the model for anti-heros to come, it has a definite murky ending. It has been done hundreds of times in the action genre since so it looks tame in comparison.

I can appreciate movies that I did not see in the theater for what they did for their time, even if I don't particularly enjoy them. But if I had seen TFC in 1971, I'm pretty sure that I would have thought that it sucked back then too. An example of lots of style covering up little substance.

To Live and Die in LA has a few great scenes but it feels like it's trying too hard to be cool and stylish a lot of the time.

                          • I thought the French Connection was good, I haven't seen it in a long time. But I'm easily entertained, the bar is low, I'm not a movie critic. I thought Scarface sucked though and I would watch 100 hours of my man Horation Cain than 2 hours of Tony Montana.
