SON OF DRACULA (1943)
d. Robert Siodmak
Starring: Lon Chaney Jr., Louise Allbritton, Robert Paige, Evelyn Ankers
Granted, I've not really seen him much in anything but classic "horror" pictures, but I don't think of Lon Chaney Jr. as much of an actor. Or at least not when he has to deliver lines. He's good in full makeup lurching around as the Wolf Man or a Mummy.
I really don't care for him playing Dracula. It was the first film in Universal's Dracula series in 7 years (probably because of Code issues) and it's just a dull, sad-sack affair. Dracula travels to New Orleans at the invitation of a plantation heiress who wants to obtain immortality And...there's not much more than that. The film doesn't end with a final battle with Dracula. No, he's already been killed. Instead we get an offscreen confrontation between the vamped-up Heiress and her ex-fiancee. Evelyn Ankers, a very pretty mainstay of Universal's films during WWII, is utterly wasted here and disppears midway through the movie.
The movie doesn't focus on the right protagonists either. Too much time is spent showing conversations between an old doctor and a stand-in for Van Helsing instead of with Dracula or the younger leads.

Relatedly, my brother insists on playing the Caro. I’ve tried lots of ways to make it interesting, but, meh.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

You have the capability of being an 1800 or 1900 fairly easily with some instruction. You see attacks that most your level absolutely do not. I am 51-4-3 vs you, but at least 10 of my wins you should have had but got lost in the weeds of the endgame. Your first real victory over me was a bishop sac on h6. It was an obvious play for an 1800, but for a 1400, not so much. I remember thinking, “Oh, he’ll never see that.” [insert a Sun Tzu quote about underestimating your opponent here].Last edited by AlabamAlum; April 9, 2022, 02:02 PM."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

I love the bishop sac on h6. Heh. I need to start playing you again. I think I could more reliably get through middle games than I was.
Anyway, yeah, I hate the Caro. He’s a solid player but I’m better so it’s really hard not to do the exchange and then beat him in the middle. But I usually opt for advanced.
Personally, I’ve become a fan of the Scotch. More often than not I go four knights, but direct is fun, too. It frustrates me to no end to see that option eliminated with dull c6.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

I always wish somebody would bring back a variation of the 4 corners in basketball but less as a time waster and more as a backdoor/baseline cut offense. I saw an 8th grade girls team that had some great AAU players run an offense like that and they couldn't be stopped. I always wonder if it would scale now with the ability of players to shoot threes.

Try f3 against the Caro-Kahn. The infamous Tartakower variation. It throws the CK player off his game and it opens up some tactical opportunities. Just be aware: it’s a two-edged sword."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln
