  • I watched another duo of movies, both parody films that happened to come out in 1993. I remember watching these dozens of times as a kid but probably hadn't seen either in 20 years. Do they hold up at all? Well...

    National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1
    d. Gene Quintano
Starring: Emilio Estevez, Samuel L. Jackson, Kathy Ireland, Jon Lovitz, William Shatner, Tim Curry

From the man who wrote Police Academy 3 AND 4!

The jokes fly relentlessly and maybe one out of five lands. Which isn't terrible for a spoof movie. I have seen much, much worse (Scary Movie franchise? Meet the Spartans? I'm looking at you). But this isn't on the level of the Naked Gun or Hot Shots! either.

The main cast does a decent job to be fair. The amount of celebrity cameos is excessive. I'd almost recommend it just for the weirdo performance Shatner puts on.

    • I thought Loaded Weapon was great.

      • Also — if you give Hot Shots a thumbs down, we’re going to have problems, you and me.

        • Hot Shots was good.

          Loaded Weapon...meh.

            • I would put Airplane, Hot Shots, Top Secret, and the first two Naked Guns in the A-tier of spoof movies

Loaded Weapon is more B-tier. Not as good as the others but way better than the shit that came after it. The genre took a nose dive somewhere around the mid-90's and they turned into Family Guy style humor: one pop culture reference after another just for reference sake.

The other one from 1993 that I watched was the less-known Fatal Instinct starring Armand Assante, Sean Young, Sherilyn Fenn, and Chris McDonald. Directed by Carl Reiner, believe it or not. It's more a spoof of popular thriller movies from around that time, mainly Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, Cape Fear, and Sleeping With the Enemy.

It's not as good as Loaded Weapon but again, I'd much rather watch it that the later garbage. Assante and Sean Young are pretty good.

              • Johnny Dangerously is the best spoof movie of all time. Joe Piscopo as Danny Vermin deserved an best supporting actor trophy...

                • You're all wrong. The best spoof movie of all time was Blazing Saddles.

Mel Brooks not only spoofed westerns, but he took on several other types of movies in that flick. It could not be made today.

He also spoofed horror movies in Young Frankenstein, probably one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

I also loved Silent Movie and High Anxiety.

And believe it or not, Mel is still around. 94 years young.

                      • Roadhouse was decent...because of Sam Elliott...aka Wade Garrett...when he died...a part of me died...and when the bear fell on the fat dude at the end it ruined an otherwise perfect movie...

                            • All of these mentions of great parody movies from the early 90s and not one mention of the timeless brilliance that is Last Action Hero.
