To be fair, I'm not drunk on absinthe, high on opium and weak from the clap, all surely leading to an elevated consciousness.

Morphy was not a drunkard or a dope fiend. He was, however, mentally ill. Many describe him as a paranoid schizophrenic. He had what many call an eidetic memory and was so far ahead of the other masters of his era that his dominance is really unrivaled in chess. His death from stroke some feel was really a suicide. A lawyer, and the son of a Louisiana Supreme Court justice, growing up in Louisiana and attending college in Alabama was not a great place for some of his political ideals: anti-slavery and pacifism. He gave up chess through great swaths of his youth and for a long period of time before his death.

There was a good piece on him in one of the chess journals. I cannot find it. This Smithsonian piece is decent, though:

As a young man, Paul Morphy vanquished eight opponents simultaneously while effectively blindfolded

Although I have not played in quite a while due to failing eyesight and an unfortunate argument on chess.com, I have downloaded chess with friends. Search AlabamAlum.

That so many chess "masters" were drunkards, drug fiends, or mentally ill is a cautionary tale for us all.

There is a bit of unfortunate truth to that, DSL. At least with mental illness. Bobby Fischer was quite insane, for example.

                      • Chess nuts boasting in an open foyer is still one my go to "jokes." It's probably second to "you can just a brook by its clover."

                            • The top boards of a chess tournament are often populated with unkempt, paranoid nut jobs.
It's true. You'll always find at least one wearing a meat helmet and singing the praises of a shorn scrotum.
