  • That’s correct. There are 5-6 others who are at least modestly compelling.

    • Magnus obliterating either Nepo or Ding would have been boring, too.

      • At least it would have had the spectacle of continued dominance by arguably the best player in history.

The obvious step down from Magnus with the ChiCom and the Rooskie - who are demonstrably no better than Hikaru, Fabi, So, or Firouzja is a let down. It’s TCU-USC in the CFP.

        • Sadly, both degenerate finalists were arrested immediately after the tournament. One for dealing opiates, the other for threatening to blow up a synagogue. But that’s chess.

            • I was tempted to tell you to take this shit to the SEC thread but then I realized an intellectual pursuit like chess has no business being discussed on The Nashville Network.

                • Nepo with white beats Ding. Ding played a French and had tension but made some errors in a time scramble. Putin lover 4, Xi lover 3.

                      • My boy? That does make me think, though: do I even have a GM out there I really like? Magnus is a historically great player that I enjoy watching. Or was. He’s playing poker last I heard. I guess it would be Hikaru, who is likable, funny and plays aggressively.

Fabi is a hired gun for America, whereas Hikaru wasn’t. He could have legitimately played under the Japanese flag but once replied when asked why he became a US citizen at such an early age that the US was the greatest country in the world. He has flown the Stars and Stripes in every major tournament and been on the US team for every Olympiad he’s played in.

So, yeah, give me Hikaru Nakamura.

                        • I like Hikaru. Plus he has a YT channel! And it's cool for patzers like me to watch him explain, very quickly, his thought processes. Watching him "Guess the ELO" is great. I mean, he clicks through a chess.com game in 15 seconds reciting the moves before he clicks on them, notes the garbage and the good instanteously (e.g., move 27, "Qe6 is weird") and then almost always undervalues the ELO.

I guess that's why he's so goddamn good at bullet.

                            • But, Hikaru ultimately has to decide if he wants to be a FIDE champion. He still couldn't beat Magnus, but he's as good as anyone else.
