    • A bear that goes on a cocaine-fueled killing spree might be the best idea Hollywood has come up with in at least a decade.

      • The beloved Critical Drinker says......Puss in Boots Last Wish is really good. I almost couldn't believe it, but then I checked the online shit and, yep -- audiences scores are really high and critical scores are lower, but still positive.

I doubt I'll ever confirm this, but, then again, it's gotta be preferable to watching CRD cede 60 points to whatever team he's playing.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
        Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Also one of the last performances by Ray Liotta.

Puss in Boots made a shit-ton of money. Possibly because it was the only animated movie to release around Christmas this year. But yeah I recall it being well-reviewed too.

          • Good example of the common-place abuse of the term "woke". Objecting to gore and drug use isn't "woke", what the hell?

Also did these people not have a clue that this movie was rated R and was considered a hard R at that by all reviewers? Jesus, you took lil kids to see it? lol

Woke movie-goers say 'Cocaine Bear' 'encourages drugs' (nypost.com)

“Blood, guts, and intestines being eaten is not suitable for kids,” Tanya Mitchell said.

“This movie is nothing like what my family thought,” Adrianne Morris shared. “It is not for children. The amount of death and blood was awful.”

Want to know the sad part? It ain't even Hollywood's idea. It's just a kookified version of a real life incident.

Scarface is getting a short re-release this November and I'm totally taking my kids to see it. Fun fact -- My dad took me to see it when I was nine. It's probably my favorite movie (at least Top 5).

I'm pretty sure that kids see a lot less sex and gore than they used to in the movies. When I was a kid it was totally normal for parents to take their kids to see R rated movies. Back before the PG-13 designation existed, there was no "middle ground" for violence and sex, and there's simply a lot of storytelling that you can't do without that stuff sometimes. And so if you wanted to see a great movie, sometimes you had to go "R".

                • Speaking of the pre PG-13 days, Beastmaster and Sheena were both rated PG and I believe Tanya Roberts (RIP) has long lingering topless scenes in both.

Since you mentioned Scarface I think it got threatened with an X rating because of the chainsaw scene. Or I may be imagining that.

You aren't misremembering. I think that there was some footage that was edited out.

How late in life did you see it?

I find that going back and picking up classics a long time after they come out almost never produces the same love for a movie as seeing it when it's new. I have seen a lot of old, very highly regarded movies this way and with a few exceptions, I was usually left thinking "what was so great about that"?

It doesn't help that usually the people who recommend the movie to you probably oversell it. I've probably been guilty of that with The Thing. There's something about not knowing what the hell to expect out of a movie and being pleasantly surprised that really sticks with you.

My dad thought that The French Connection was da bomb. I watched it for the first time two or three years ago and I thought it was utter shit.

                        • Between the two I think Scarface has aged a lot worse. Not that's it's awful or anything. The Thing is pretty timeless. It's amazing how well most of the effects hold up today.

I generally avoid the really grotesque gore or body horror stuff but The Thing is an exception for me. The 80's remake of The Blob is another one with some gruesomeness that ordinarily turns me off but I really enjoy in that movie.

                          • What hasn't aged well about Scarface?

                            • Might be the wrong way to put it. I feel like a 20 year old today would know most of the movie without ever having seen it, it's been parodied, referenced, and quoted so much. Besides that I think it strikes me as a very 80's movie in a way The Thing does not. Could just be superficial reasons, the fashion, being set in Miami, and all the cocaine, making me say that.
