They got the ark with Indy existing and they would have gotten the ark without Indy. Or I am looking at this wrong?

That's correct. But that doesn't make it a shaggy dog -- which is why you never thought of it as such.
IMO -- and perhaps I'm wrong, but the quintessential shaggy dog is a long-ass, go nowhere story w/ a total dud of an ending. A total waste of time. Raiders of the Lost Ark was a super-entertaining story with a pretty good ending that was most definitely not a waste of time.Last edited by iam416; May 4, 2022, 07:51 AM.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

Shaggy dog is possibly the wrong designation (fucking Froot).
But the final outcome of the Nazis melting/taking an L with this magical artifact would have happened with or without Indy. And I had never really considered that."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

In other words, Indiana could have stayed back in the the States bedding down underaged girls (it’s canon!) and if someone had ran in and said, “Indy! Get your whip and your fedora! Gotta keep the Nazis from getting the Ark!” He could have just said, “Nah. Those fuckers will just melt their faces off with it. I’ll go and get it once they are dead.” as he turned back to his 13-year-old lover."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Lebowski? Okay. I’m not necessarily agreeing with or understanding your definition of a “shaggy dog movie” -but I don’t care enough to get into some pedantic definition discussion."The problem with quotes on the Internet is that it is sometimes hard to verify their authenticity." -Abraham Lincoln

Yeah. We're not operating under a common defintion. To me, Abe Simpson stories are shaggy dog stories. It's hard to be a shaggy dog story if the story itself is compelling. But, eh, whatever.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

Gimme five bees for a quarter, we'd say!
Incidentally the legendary Abe Simpson story takes place in what's probably a Top 5 episode for me: Last Exit to Springfield, the union episode. That thing is just crammed full of jokes that land.
