  • If you say so, dude. I'll work on mastering e4 (if by mastering you mean not losing the game in the first 6 moves).

    • I will soon be discussing a sequence of cult/bad 80's movies which shall chase the D&D Dungeon-masters from this thread as surely as if they had seen an orc.

          FLASH GORDON (1980)
          Director: Mike Hodges
Starring: Sam Jones, Max von Sydow, Melody Anderson, Timothy Dalton, Topol, Ornella Muti, Peter Wyndgarde, Brian Blessed

Beginning my march through the 80's i started with this beloved cult classic in honor of the late Max von Sydow. I've actually never seen it before and enjoyed it thoroughly. The flying effects are laughable, even by the standards of 1978's Superman. But otherwise this film is a feast for the eyes. The costumes and sets are all over-the-top, zany, and well...flashy.

Ming (von Sydow), Emperor of the Universe, is bored and decides to destroy Earth for some mild amusement. A good thing that New York Jets star quarterback Flash Gordon (Sam Jones) is accidentally kidnapped by a deranged scientist and taken to Ming's world. Can Flash save earth???

Let's be honest. Sam Jones is a lousy actor. Melody Anderson, playing Dale Arden, isn't much better. It's the supporting cast that holds the movie together. Von Sydow of course, Brian Blessed as the leader of the Hawkmen, and mad scientist Topol all chew up the scenery. So does Peter Wyndgarde as a Darth Vadar sort of character that is Ming's top underling.

And oh yeah...somehow this movie landed Queen to provide the soundtrack.

          • Didn't they end up dubbing over Sam Jones's lines because his acting was so shitty?

            Comment

            • A lot of his lines sound like they were ADR'd in after the fact so that's possible. What there is is pretty bad so if the original takes were even worse...wow

              • The movie would probably be remembered a lot more fondly were it not for the two leads being so bad. The supporting cast is fantastic and there are one or two really good action scenes as well.

How hard is the Scotch game to play? I'm definitely feel most comfortable playing e4-nf3, so the Scotch Game is an obvious option, but I've never really played it.

As an aside, I'm becoming increasingly comfortable with Nimzo. Huzzah. I let two wins slip through my fingers with a bad endgame move (on was horrific--I knew what the winning move was and convinced myself otherwise). Anywho, I'm navigating the openings and middle game decently as black. White is still a mixed bag. Anywho, I think I may prefer d4 to moving white bishop.

                  • The Scotch is very solid and has easy familiar themes and positional struggles. Black is often too passive (Philidor is common) or too aggressive. Speaking of, you need to become adept at handing 4...Qh4. It's sharp and a misplay by white can result in trouble.

What I advise at your level is to play similar thematic games as black as you play as white. It's helps on position "intuition" and the Nimzo and the Scotch are not closely related.

                      • Also, look at the lines of the Scotch Gambit and the Goering Gambit.

                            • Well, Nimzo seems a little on it's own conceptually. Does it have a related white opening?

You're thinking of ALS, not cyanide. The gambit's namesake succumbed thereto.
