  • Yes it is ...... I'm not even going to toss sass back osu's way. Useless endeavor given the current M football circumstances. The rivalry can die as far as I'm concerned.

I'm advocating for BT realignment to improve the competitiveness of the conference..... a strategic withdrawal for me. M to the West, Wisconsin to the East - Alvarez/Chryst have had their way in that division with 350lb OLmen and a 90s style run game. Time to force those fuckers to upgrade. Move the bastards.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

    • I'm a little sick of this myself, but would rather see what happens in the paid-players era. And there's still nothing stopping anybody from noting that whilst we all know Buckeyes would whore out their own mothers in order to win games, it's also worth pointing out that they would probably shortchange themselves when handling the money because counting to ten isn't a given.

      • OK ...... good sass, Hack. Better than my strategic withdrawal, actually.

My problem with that line of thinking, though, is that sassing osu's academic cred and ethical standing is an old line. It holds Michigan up as a superior institution, which it very well may be on certain measures, but evades the reality that M sucks at beating osu on the football field.

We both have our ideas why that is so...... you know my view on this ....... we share a view that culturally, osu has a different view of football. Whether or not that is a good thing or a bad thing is debatable. That whatever osu is doing to beat M is working!

At this point, since were' not going to see the kind of sea changes that might effectuate more competitiveness across the entirety of the FBS, what transpires with the aftermath of NIL may be worth hanging around to see if M can beat those fuckers at the player compensation game and attract more Top 100 dudes with a bigger compensation package from deep pocketed alumni.

        • Paying players is a sea change!

Glad you see it, though. I think expressing legitimate and verified concerns about the number of fingers Buckeye fans have to work with when engaged in mathematical computation is not only better than your strategic withdrawal but it's also better than your stated intention to root for them in the playoffs. I think you should wait a week, and if you still are suffering those symptoms maybe ask your doctor.

          • Heh ...... TBH, I think the osu football program is good. My sense is that they've achieved their winning ways (that 92% win rate through the tressel/ufm/day era) honestly, for the most part. osu is not squeaky clean (talent's own assessment) but neither is M. The cultural differences b/t the 2 institutions might have something to do with the leg-up they seem to be able to obtain on the football field. IOW, osu aggressively exploits any gray area, might step over the line, one hell of a lot better than M does. It's an edge. A big one? Nah.

osu wins. Winning attracts dudes. Dudes perpetuate winning. Examples of the accuracy of that logic abounds in CFB throughout the ages. In my mind there's that juice somewhere in that logic that attracts dudes beyond simply winning but that is JMO.

BTW, I am a fucking doctor ...... or nearly one although my 25 years experience in the medical field tells me there were times when I would have selected me to care for a patient or perform a procedure rather than that 34 year old MD who just finished up his GP residency...... sorry, a humble brag. I'll check with myself on those symptoms. No, wait, I already have. I pronounce the patient sane in every way.

One more thing. NIL may or may not lead to actually "paying" players in the manner I think you mean that. Right now, my sense is that it will not be the sea change you say you think it will be. That is because it is academics making the decisions on these matters. You know, the ones who value the arcane amateurism/student athlete BS and see the university they preside over as above the fray of sports as a money making endeavor. If you got a handful of really bright folks in a room that could cut through that shit, the ones who don't have a vested interest in preservation of the status quo, things might be very different. But that's not the way it is and I don't see that changing any time soon.

            • Start with coaching hires. Consider the past 18 seasons from that perspective. End inquiry.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
              Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

              • I do know you have professional medical expertise. Both because you've said so and also because the qualitative analysis is a dead giveaway. Talent would probably pay you for posting your opinion if you told him you were going to stop.Litigating this issue in this quiet little corner of the internet seems to be bloodsport for him.

Srsly, I agree that the paid-players era is going to be a what-you-make-of-it sorta thing. Entirely possible OSU will figure out how to monetize it better. I'm sure they're thinking harder about it already than Michigan is. But this looks to me like something decentralized, in which the solutions will come from clever alumni no longer constrained by the institutional culture of the university. It's great that it maintains its dignity and hasn't forgotten why it exists in the first place, but the downside is certainly that rigidity an inability to be innovative save for in specific settings.

                      That will leave a mark.

                      • I think it already has. Since we're not likely to end the inquiry, the logical conclusion is that you'd damn well better get the other stuff right. Michigan's just not comfortable with even the legal aspects of what you have to do to win, but still expect to have a lot of wins. Attitude very similar to the Catholic Church's attitude about money.

Exactly. Even if Michigan were to adopt the SMU-pre-death penalty model, they'd likely mess that up too, given their track record in coaching hires. At least SMU got away with it for a few decades.
