It'll change. TV ratings will push a rules change -- I bet about oversigning -- once people tire of seeing the same CFP year after year. It'll take too long, though, of course.

No one can say how long Day will stay or if he doesn't have NFL ambitions. He'll certainly have problems keeping assistants soon like Urban did. We're one bad hire away from having Cooper again.
Less than 10 years ago Clemson was thought of as an overrated joke of a program, certainly no competition for the conference's big dogs: Florida State and Virginia Tech
Alabama went through 25 years of being mainly just an above average program between Bryant and Saban.
Nothing's permanent. We've got some inherent strengths that won't change (Ohio's high school football system being vastly superior to Michigan's, for instance) but playing at this level isn't sustainable.

Ohio State is ratings gold. The "oversigning" rules are still fairly flexible. Margin doesn't matter to Ohio State all that much, but getting assrailed seems to provoke all sorts of consternation amongst M fans. Every school is a bad HC-hire away from significant dropoff. I don't think Ryan Day was that hire despite what Brian Cook and Froot continue to assert. And the State of the M program is that fans are complaining that Ohio State is just too damn good.
There's a word for being the gold standard program for a conference. I remember using it a lot to sass Prime (and others).Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

Yes. Oversigning is allowed, and I support doing anything that is allowed. But it wasn't always allowed, and the NCAA has acted before to avoid the concentration of talent amongst a few programs. So my best guess is that the history of the scholarship limit suggests they might see ending oversigning as a path to diffusing talent and getting some fresh faces in the CFP more often. That's certainly more doable for them than touching anything that involves financial flows.

I do remember the laughing when the Alabama folks were out of control crazy when they hired Saban. CGVT and I thought it was ridiculous, we couldn't believe how over the top it was. I seem to recall a story of hearing how some old lady fainted when he was hired. It might have been Phyllis from Mulga. In retrospect the gigantic celebration of the Vain One's hiring wasn't big enough and CGVT and I were the dumb ones.
