So, at this point, MOST of the skill players are injured. In addition to all of this we've been talking about, you have to question what the heck is going on with S&C, and how exactly these guys are practicing. It wasn't a shock that Charbonnett, who came in with a nagging injury, is now hurt after 33 carries into a stacked line in his second start.

IMO, that casts a whole new light on questions about Harbaugh's ability to hire and retain staff. Keeping good ones, like Fisch, is hard these days. Frey had a very good track record, Brown is unquestionably a good hire. Mattison, good, Washington, good, Warinner, Partrige, Zordich - all GOOD.
I don't know that criticism of Harbaugh's ability to hire staff (surround himself with competent people) is justified.
With respect to Gattis, it's still early.
I'm focusing on the next three games, see how the coaches and players respond, rather than continuing to speculate that Harbaugh is afflicted or search for skeleton's in JH's closet.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. Going back and analyzing whether or not Harbaugh was the hire is besides the point. He was definitely the safest hire. The Harbaugh experiment shows you how much you don't know when you hire a coach and how much you can get anchored to initial impressions. Its easy to say hire a Meyer and Saban, but they are kind of like unicorns. There are a lot of successful coaches that go to a different job and flop. People in Alabama were going crazy when they hired Saban and it all seemed very silly, now it certainly doesn't look so silly.
It is kind of a crapshoot, you might know that Brady Hoke is a bad hire, but saying who is going to be a great hire is much harder. It's why we've seen many great programs have strings of bad hires.

Thanks. That changes things for me. One of the things I thought about harbaugh is that he would insulate the programme from Ann Arbor bullshit. I guess he's lost the leverage to do that.
I think harbaugh is good at cleaning up in-season messes. Good at game-to-game stuff. One of his best game plans was the one in which he went into the Ohio State game with John o'korn. We should expect to see gradual improvement in the next four or five games. But that won't say very much about the years to come, in my opinion. Success or failure for this program at this point is going to come in December and January.

If Harbaugh has lost the leverage to ward off meddling, then I wouldn't take it as a given that he'll stay in the job. IIRC, despite the fact that he wanted to be here for the long haul, he negotiated pretty hard with Hackett about some details around his own control, and that goes beyond the assistants pay pool. This either gives me hope -- that he can now grab back control and do what he wants -- or none at all, if we can't retain him and if any future coach is going to be subject to the same nonsense. You'd think that people might learn from the Beilein experience to just make a good hire and leave that guy alone to do his thing.
All this is a big if of course.
