  • Gattis joked around that Shea spent too much time on the golf course this summer. It looks like it.

Yet another example of how players aren't buying into the program and not going the extra mile to bring the program to the next level. Compare that the stories that you hear about how dedicated JK Dobbins was to improving over the off season and how much it shows on the field.

    • actually, as it turns out v. Iowa, sack-adjusted rushing yards were obtained at a 4.8 ypa clip.
Their 3 regular RBs went for 86 on 22. Hassan Haskins bumped up their rushing YPA with an 18 yard run at the end of the 2nd half when Iowa didn't give a fuck if they ran the ball. Iowa's 3 regular RBs went for 67 on 21. That's not a particularly big difference.

MT's assertion appears at face to be correct.
It's only correct because passing is such an absolutely awful option right now. They're better off banging their head for 3 yards and hoping for the best. Good luck when start to play better defenses. Recall the talking point -- Iowa State outgained Iowa by 100+ yards! Iowa State had almost 400 yards. Iowa State ran for 4.8 ypa without any sack adjustments.

You're overall take remains correct. The offense is just plain bad. I mean, it's really, really bad.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
      Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

      • The run blocking wasn't too bad. Patterson being worthless in all facets of the game outside of passing plays where he has five seconds to throw the ball hurts everything. It's basically just a shitty, predictable running game out of the shotgun, without any of the misdirection that was present in the Jedd Fisch offense, or any of the RPO or read option that every other shotgun running offense in the country has. Lack of talent at RB doesn't help.

        • Against Rutgers, the running game was shit too, except for in the 4th quarter. Why? Because when Joe Milton came in, the defense started to respect the QB keeper and Hassan Haskins suddenly started finding 10 yard chunks. I'd take Milton over Patterson at this point.

          • Michigan has 1 rushing attempt over 15 yards through 5 games. I cant believe I liked it better when Jim was running his offense and calling the plays.

            • I think the big takeaway is Michigan sent a lot of players to the NFL over the past three years and this should have been considered a down year. In hindsight it is clear now that Karan Higdon was really, really important to the offense and they haven't adequately replaced him.

The lack of explosive plays sounds like a big problem that can't be solved with play calling. If you have an explosive player he's should standout even if you have a rudimentary offense. The only unit that was supposed to be explosive was the receivers, but they seem to have trouble getting open. Maybe their talent is still raw. As much as the coaching staff can be blamed for the lack of developing quarterbacks, it seems like the wide receiver coaching position has been in a constant state of flux.

There's something to this, for sure. Just so many versions of it being expressed right now.

                • I also agree with the missing-Fisch comment. The offense hasn't looked sane since he was here, apart from the running game last year as it was rebuilt in-season.

                  • The loss of Chris Evans figures in as well. He was next in line to be the featured back, and had he been available, I think we'd at least see a bit of improvement over what we have now.

Evans is not out of the picture, btw. He is still living in AA, and is reportedly going to make an attempt to rejoin the team next season. That's just a rumor, and I have no proof to base that on, but its out there.

But the point is still valid. Patterson and the running game has come down to,

                    a. He's not allowed to run
                    b. He doesn't want to run
                    c. He can't run due to an undisclosed injury
                    d. He doesn't know when to run
                    e. Any combination of the above.
f . All of the above.

They better figure it out, because they're getting ready to play some teams that hate their guts, and will absolutely destroy them, given the opportunity.

Part of me wishes we had the other Harbaugh on the sidelines.

                    • All parts of me save for the sentimental bits wish we had Other Harbaugh. He's the normal-person version.

We don't miss Higdon. We wasn't a special player.

                          • I'd rather have Hidgon or Evans than Turner or Haskins, but I don't think that we're talking big differences. It looks like everybody associated with coaching the offense is just a total clown.

This is probably the worst coached offense in the history of the program. The 2013 and 2014 offenses were garbage too, but they had some pretty big talent holes here and there. There's no legitimate excuse for us to not have a Top 20 offense this year.
