Shea Patterson is a better QB than Josh Gattis has made him appear with his play design. The receivers have made him look bad with their route running on the RPO.

Hack, here's a thought on your football viewing options: I did a 5d trial subscription to YouTubeTV. I'm in Seattle so my "home" stations feature the local channels here and everything else that the YouTube feed provides in the Seatle Zip Code. It includes the BTN which I don't have in ATL or FTL.

When you select the BTN, I can stream live. The Rutgers game is on the schedule for Saturday at 9am local (PST). I had mentioned to you that it looked like the football games had been packaged with BTN+. I don't think that is the case .... just some of M sports. I'll see tomorrow morning when I open YouTube TV in my Chrome book and see if I can stream the Rutgers game.

After I signed up for the trial and gave a credit card #, I went to the YouTube home page and cancelled the trial to avoid an auto-charge to my CC on October 1st.

                      • Back to the Gattis question ........ I've seen him interviewed post Wisconsin and read a ton of commentary that criticizes him. The best of it came from SpaceCyote (SC) whose long post game analysis also featured questions and answers. He's very good at what he does given the limitations I have spoken about above. He is also not a fan of Brian and the two have had a few dust-ups early in my experience with mgo over game analysis. Not anymore.

SC didn't lay all the blame on Gattis for M's shitty offensive performance but I'd say he's 70/30 Gattis v. execution errors as the underlying problem. He exonerates the OL by stating the Gattis offense has "timing issues" in the back field. He didn't expand on that. He does not completely exonerate Patterson but states he's getting too much criticism when the underlying problem is play-design - I added route tree limits based on the perception that Patterson cannot be as bad as he has looked failing to see wide open receivers unless his options are limited by design and those routes are decoys whihc he is coached to ignore.

If you buy my argument and some of the routes on a given play are decoys, they are worthless because they are failing to clear a zone where the target receiver is going to run into off an RPO. Is that by design or is it an execution error on the part of the receivers? Looks to me like the times a back-side (usually the field side )receiver (TE or WR) runs a route with the intent to drag a S or LB out of the middle zone for a slant from the slot, he goes straight down field 10 yards and sits. That accomplishes nothing. The conflict player (S or LB) isn't going to bite on that. Since the QB is reading the conflict player (S or LB) at the mesh on an RPO, and the S or LB doesn't bite, the pass option is off. I've seen this a lot with Michigan. Just one pretty obvious example of poor play design v. poor execution by the QB/receivers.

Gattis talked a lot about the players not getting down on themselves after an error and to keep fighting. There may be some truth to that but, to me the bigger issue may be that the players aren't stupid. They know whatever is being called out there on a play-by-play basis isn't working. I think that is the frustration you are seeing in their faces. As the game unfolds and the poorly designed plays keep getting called in, frustration levels increase and disappointment takes over. Feeds on the D too.

                        Gattis. Occam's Razor.

                        • I couldn't link these videos so, here's the post where another mgo poster I like talks about the questionable play design. He shows M executing a poorly designed RPO and then a comparison of how it's supposed to be designed and executed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItwPe-ipaIg Wisconsin is in man coverage with no free safety. Michigan runs inside zone with Bell running a 5 step slant. The safety takes a few steps up, Shea makes the correct read but throws the ball behind Bell.

                          • The big question seems to be: can Gattis, on his own, correct this stuff? If he can't or doesn't recognize the flaws in his approach, can Harbaugh correct him? Not sure this is in JH's wheelhouse.

                            • That answer is no. Gattis is a work in progress. JH will have to mentor him. Or fire him.
