  • Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
    Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

    • And I still say Devin Bush papered over DT issues last year. That dude could play.

      • Brown never had a Devin Bush at BC.

The problem isn't Brown. It's Harbaugh. He sucks.

        • You recruit 4 and 5 star players to avoid having to run gimmick defenses. Blitzing is something all defenses have to do at some point but you are always risking being exposed. If you are running schemes that allow Wisconsin running backs to scamper outside for big gains then you aren't doing your job correctly. Your QB position is a problem but Don Brown is a problem when you face good teams.

I'll take a defensive coordinator that emphasizes gap sound schemes over the guy who goes for the high risk, high reward defense.

          • At this point, Harbaugh's results in big games are no better than Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke.

Harbaugh was hired to win games like today's game. In every opportunity against ranked opponents on the road, he has failed.

What would the justification be in keeping him, with those numbers, when both Hoke and Rodriguez were fired for the same thing?

If Warde Manuel keeps Harbaugh around much longer, he's going to owe Hoke and Rodriguez an apology.

            • Harbaugh seems to like gimmicks, or, at least, shunning conventional widsom. Maybe it was fine and fair to shun conventional wisdom at Stanford in the late aughts by embracing manball and beefing up in a period in which fewer were doing that. It was fine and fair to shun it in the NFL in the early part of the decade by presenting defenses with the unconventional threat of a running QB in Kaep. Maybe college football in the here and now is just not the place for that. Maybe he'd be better off in the NFL, where just a little bit of variance from the standard package is enough to scratch that itch he has to be offbeat. Maybe for the rest of the season he should go back to his instincts. Sure, some of the points put up against OSU were in garbage time, but before they quit out there there were moving the ball. Last year's big failure was defensive, and the offseason's big change was on offense. That wouldn't solve the problem of awful predictable third-down calls, but maybe he should just be himself and sink or swim that way.

              Just guessing.

              • Either way, it's very unlikely he's going to get it done here, and it's time to move on to another awful, arrogant Michigan football coaching-search circus. Some guys just stop being good at it. The Chip Kelly example's one. Joe Dumars was a fucking genius GM until he became the total opposite. Just is what it is. Our bad luck that in three major coaching jobs Harbaugh was brilliant in two, and a bonehead in the one that was ours.

                • Yeah the problem with the embracement of manball is they haven't shown they are actually tough. it is more theory than execution. They faced real manball today and got thumped. That stuff takes time to develop and it doesn't develop if you are continually changing coaching personnel.

                  • Fourth time's a charm? Shit I don't know. There are some guys out there that I like but the real question is whether the next guy will do the worst work of his life at Michigan, like his three predecessors. The non-fantasy guy that I like the best is Jeff Brohm but his teams at Purdue do have some issues that I really don't like. Matt Campbell looks good. I'd consider Pat Fitzgerald to be an upgrade over Jim Harbaugh, albeit not a huge one. I'd love Paul Chryst, but I doubt that he would come. I like Mark Stoops OK for his ability to recuit but he probably has a hard ceiling. I have no doubt that we could find a guy who is currently a better coach at his current school, but I don't know whether it would translate.

I'll take that chance though. Harbaugh needs to go.

                    • Agreed. Manball guys believe in doing the same thing over and over and over until execution goes from excellent to slightly more excellent. They don't scamper through a bunch of different playbooks and trust that the core stuff will always be there even if they don't practice it all that much anymore.

It is potentially very interesting to see what this coaching search could be like. I don't think anyone will broach Meyer, though what a storyline that would be. But I wonder if that search might be conducted with a bit of humility for a change.

That's the part that makes it even worse. All the various "factions" will come out of the woodwork again, and want "their guy" to be hired.

Some unbelievably STUPID Michigan fans have even been asking for Urban Meyer to be approached. I mean, seriously? What on God's beautiful green earth would make ANY Michigan fan think that Urban fricking Meyer would WANT to come to Michigan? Do you think the man is insane? There is no amount of money, or prestige, or promises from alumni, that would make him want to come to Michigan. I just want to get about an inch from those people's ears and SCREAM at them for suggesting such a thing. Dear lord ...

If a coaching search becomes necessary, Michigan would be best off to do a real, bona-fide search. Find that diamond in the rough that nobody is paying attention to. Do some real homework. Find the guy who is just really good at coaching football. Give him the job.

In reality, Harbaugh isn't going to be fired this year. And even if the team goes 6-6, he'll likely be back next year, as long as he wants to come back. If he chooses to leave, I can think of at least one southern NFL team that would hire him in a heartbeat, if he wants to return to the NFL. This off season is going to be interesting.

What's that about Brohm? I don't watch enough other football to have an opinion here. I saw Leach and Joe Morehead brought up on twitter.

Dunno. Highly doubt they'll do that. Too many cooks in that kitchen.

                            • Urban Meyer would entertain coming to Michigan. Sticking it to some of the OSU people who didn't back him would be right in his wheelhouse. The chance to make U of M a national championship contender would be a great incentive. It's not an impossible suggestion.
