I said it in the game thread but I will reiterate it, those last three passes by Patterson were so off he looked like he was playing with a bad oblique injury.

mgo had a diary entry on oblique injuries from a Physical Therapist who works with athletes who have sustained this kind of injury. The injury inhibits trunk rotation because it hurts if there is a muscle strain or tear of the oblique muscles - these are the guys on your flanks. They originate from the outer part of the fifth through twelfth ribs on each side of the rib cage. From these ribs, the muscle then runs diagonally down each side and connects to the top of the pelvis (iliac crest, linea alba), and the pubic bone. When the trunk rotates as in a pitch, or throwing a football, both sides are activated, one releasing the other contracting then the released side required to snap back
It's not a common injury, can be quite painful and, like most muscle strains or tears can take 4-8w to heal. I found it interesting that pitchers require much more rotation to throw the baseball hard than a QB needs to throw a football hard. Most of the speed imparted to a thrown football comes from the hips. It can still be painful to throw and according to the PT that wrote the article it affects accuracy more than it affects power. I think we saw that.
The more I read, the more I think Patterson is injured and the coaches are not being completely truthful about the implications of Patterson's injury and how it is probably affecting his ability to call the plays that get the offense into the right set as well as to confidently make throws or run a keeper. No surprise there.
I do believe that even with the injury, Patterson can make the reads, get the offense into the right play and deliver the ball to a receiver better than McCaffrey does - at least in practice. I think Patterson has the yipsin live action because of (1) the pressure he senses he is under to play championship caliber football (both Gattis and Harbaugh said that today) and (2) the injury fucking hurts when he takes a hit or throws the ball. I also think that if the coaches started putting Mccaffrey in, and he doesn't throw, it could be seen by the opponent as a fairly obvious attempt to run a ZR QB keeper, an Arc-Zone read option or any other play where the coaches are unwilling to let him go deep. That increases his chances of sustaining a season ending injury as well.
Therefore, I get why Patterson is still the starting QB.
Lidocain mixed with methylprednisalone and injected near or into the injured muscle area would work wonders. Just kidding. That's not going to happen.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
It took Verlander about 18 months to get over his oblique injury, his was pretty severe and is a pitcher. This is a different situation but anytime you have something like that it can be troublesome. I have no idea at all about if he has an injury or not but if he had something like that, his throws I saw look consistent with that type of injury.
"Here's my biggest concern - the Jim Harbaugh at Stanford and at San Francisco, that guy, that killer instinct has been missing. Go back to the 2016 season, Iowa, Ohio State, Notre Dame last year, Ohio State, even Michigan State last year. All ultra conservative approaches when the going got tough.
"We've seen regression from our quarterbacks each of the past three years as we got to November. And now we just saw a significant regression from our senior quarterback in Week 2. Why? I think it stems from the top on down. There may be some pre-game, preseason talk, but on game day, where does that confidence go? From top on down, that self-doubt permeates the entire team, the quarterbacks especially.
"I was really optimistic the hire of Gattis was going to have a positive impact on Harbaugh's approach. Don Brown certainly doesn't lack for confidence and you can see that in his side of the ball. Even though they were getting pushed and pushed, they didn't back down and made the game's biggest plays. But the offense? The confidence isn't there. It's like he's just trying not to lose."

Patterson was noticably having pain in his rib/stomach area later in the MTSU game. All I noticed vs Army was the one designed run where Shea had trouble getting up and seemed to be in pain...
Pretty sure Shea has an injury though no idea the severity. As a fan I'd like to have seen McCaffrey who I thought looked very good last season...
Haven't seen anything that makes me change my mind about the season. yeah, they beat Army but certainly did not deserve to win that game. The offense better get its head out of its ass or this thing is going to be very ugly in Madison.
2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR
All will be right in the world of A2...and HARBAUGH!!!!!!
If the team that played Army last week shows up in Madison it's going to be more likely::
Wisconsin 34
Michigan 10
If they're going to flip that, or keep it close at all they've got to have better ball security and find some offense.
In fact, if that team shows up again in ANY other game this year (including Rutgers), they'll lose. For all intents and purposes, they lost on Saturday to Army.
They may be 2-0, but its the weakest 2-0 I've ever seen from a Michigan team.
