Some school where he can recruit elite players is going to come at him with the right package one of these days -- money, speed, discretion, respect, resources, etc. But in retrospect it wasn't going to be Michigan, which just isn't comfortable conducting a balls-out coaching search in the way you need to to reel in a big fish.
Love the Mark Few idea.
But the point is that they decided to settle almost right off the bat.

Why don't you think he'll retire in Gonzaga? He's already a legend there and the Zags are somewhat like the UNLV of this era. Few's currently got the top-rated class for 2020, with 2 top-50 guys. I think he's totally a lifer there. Otherwise, he could've jumped to a big school years ago. UCLA's had 2 coaching changes in the last handful of years.
I just don't believe any of that, or think it's reasonable to assume that he's going to be in the same job for 35 years (assuming a retirement at ~70). It's always ``oh that guy's got the perfect situation there he'll never leave" right up until they do, and it's ``oh well these guys are competitive and nomadic and always up for the next challenge". We have no friggin clue. Apparently everyone in the AD's office was more suprised than Brendan Quinn, who seems to be the only one who sensed it coming with Beilein. Maybe Few doesn't think at this moment that he will. Someday somebody will come at just the right time. That's why you have to make them say no.
They weren't getting Beard, but look at what Texas Tech did after the season, they stepped up to the plate to keep him with a much bigger extension and made him the 4th highest paid coach in College Basketball.
I'm sure they reached out to other coaches, but you have to temper that with what they were willing to spend and for that you don't know. Some coaches might not show any interest in moving at a certain number but they may change their tune at another price. Like the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase always said, "every man has his price."

Few also has 2 top-50 guys in the 2019 class, which is ranked #12 overall. They'll never be a Duke or UK but he's getting top players to come out there.

Just confirms that as long as B-Ball program doesn't bring NCAA trouble...TPTB don't give a damn and will NEVER pay what is needed for top flight head coaches. But for Football---the sky is the limit.

It's the same exact thing people were saying a week ago about Beilein. Fact is we can only guess what's in the heads of these guys. And when they say stuff about how they'll never leave, we don't know if that's because they mean it or the realities of recruiting mandate it.
As for this one, well, it was another kinda silly coaching search as far as we know. Michigan's coach-retention strategy isn't the same as Texas Tech's. We're lucky it turned out potentially good.
While were all speculating how all of this went down, man, I think I know how the deciders at Michigan act. They have a pattern of acting a certain way when it comes to hiring personnel into the high profile, revenue sports. Clearly, they don't like a crisis. They want control. As fans, we don't always like how that control is defined thinking what they do to establish it is often injurious to what fans want - establishing Michigan athletics at the top of the heap in all sports - winning at all costs. M's deciders clearly have other priorities and they've all been discussed extensively here.
Maybe I'm giving the deciders too much credit but, the typical approach has been that there is a well thought out plan. The one exception that I've pointed out already is the RR hiring. That looked like, in retrospect, an ill-conceived hire after the Les Miles hiring - probably plan A - blew up and put Martin and the rest of the deciders in a crisis mode. The rest, with Harbaugh being a prime example (there are others going back to Bo), there was a plan.
The hiring of Howard looks to me like there was a plan and it went down pretty much as anticipated. The sideshow of a search was just that. The money cannon thing and how the lack of it shut out reasonable approaches to the top coaches just doesn't work for me. JMO.
In addition, I still believe Manuel knew JB was leaving for the NBA at some point after the 2018/19 season, facilitated his departure and had Howard, maybe among others, in his sights for a while. May have actually reached out to him to include him in the plan - coach in waiting - at least letting him know he was in consideration. There may have been others in that plan and we can't know if Howard was at the top of the list. I think there is a good chance he was for any of a number of reasons with the calculus putting him there being fundamentally financial.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
In the 20 years I've seen posts.from Whitley he will bend over backwards to see the organization's point of view. He doesn't criticize all that much, you would be wise to listen to him.
Howard might be a good hire, he is risky.
If any of the "deciders" facilitated Beilein's departure they should be fired on the spot.
