And maybe Howard turns out to be great, but this search really rings hollow when UM keeps proclaiming to be the leaders and best. Well leaders, with these kinds of resources, do not allow themselves to be hamstrung by $$$$$.2012 Detroit Lions Draft: 1) Cordy Glenn G , 2) Brandon Taylor S, 3) Sean Spence olb, 4) Joe Adams WR/KR, 5) Matt McCants OT, 7a) B.J. Coleman QB 7b) Kewshan Martin WR

When the top candidates were Juwan Howard, Ed Cooley, and Luke Yaklich... absolutely.
Not to diminish my opinion of Howard. Again, good reason to call it a hire with clear pros and cons.

On Manuel ..... I may not know basketball but I know how M's AD operates and what sort of guard-rails are in place to keep Manuel on the right track put there by the President (who answers to the BOR AND the faculty) and the BOR.
Right off the top of my head, Warde's list that he supposedly had after JB's flirtation with the Pistons, may have been, at the most, 10 names. Those might have been tossed around after it was known that JB was headed to the Cavs and 1/2 of them were eliminated. So, the pool was small and I suspect mostly because those eliminated didn't "fit." I could go on about that but I think we all know what is a fit and what isn't at M.
I also don't think it was a matter of out-bidding the Cavs for JB's services ........ JB wanted to go a year ago and nobody involved in his employment was going to hold his feet to the fire to keep him at M. See JB's latest contract extension, the minuscule pay increase and without a buy-out. I doubt any amount of money would have convinced him to stay. Neither was there going to be any obstacles created for JB at any level within the University to hinder his movement to the NBA.
The suggestion that Manuel's "search" was a "football search" is pretty accurate if what that means was it was a show (not very well performed in this case) to make it look like Howard wasn't THE GUY for a long time just like Harbaguh was the target as soon as Brandon was shown the door and Hackett came aboard. You could argue that all the endorsements from NBA stars supporting the Howard hire was orchestrated in advance and played when Manuel directed it.
There was no need for a money cannon when this may have been a signed, sealed and delivered deal a while ago with Howard the coach in waiting all along. If it was and there is even a hint of truth to this scenario, I'd have to congratulate Manuel and M for knowing what would and what wouldn't work as a plan to replace JB in the window it was probably known he would leave.Last edited by Jeff Buchanan; May 22, 2019, 01:48 PM.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. I'm not sure I buy the Beilein was going to the NBA no matter what, it could be true but nobody was saying that prior to him going. He was the perfect coach for Michigan, it may be true no amount of money would have convinced him to stay but if you're Michigan with unlimited resources you test that theory. Thats my opinion. I think a lot of the JB to the NBA or bust is rationalization and Beilein not being the type to burn any bridges.

OTH, my theory fits pretty well with how Michigan has functioned over the years when it comes to athletics. The only real departure from that in my years of observing how things work was Bill Martin's hiring of RR - a huge disaster on many levels and insiders at the BOR would tell you if they weren't muzzled by their own elitism that many knew it was a bad hire and had something to do with putting in motion the kinds of things we learned about in hindsight that were intended to make their view supportable over time.
From a fit standpoint, Juan Howard is just about perfect. There are plenty of observers saying the hire is a safe one that puts fit ahead of actually being able to coach. Someone I read pointed out that JB was a good fit if not a coach with a sterling record as a CBB guy (I think a case refuting that could be made). His record at M sucked for the first three years of his tenure and fans wanted him fired. The next 13 years were pretty good. Howard may follow the same trajectory. I can wait.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. Well, shoot... why not stay a couple more years and work on your game, and work your ass into the first round? More guaranteed money, and likely with a better team.
As of now, I see him ending up on some middling NBA team with his butt firmly planted on the bench except for mop up time. If he's going to actually play, he'll have to go to the G league, or back to Europe. I just can't see this as a good decision for him.
Oh well, like AC/DC says, .. "Money Talks" ...

Mark Few was the one I thought would be most attainable. He's not going to retire at Gonzaga. He's been there 19 years already. Some school where he can recruit elite players is going to come at him with the right package one of these days -- money, speed, discretion, respect, resources, etc. But in retrospect it wasn't going to be Michigan, which just isn't comfortable conducting a balls-out coaching search in the way you need to to reel in a big fish.

Chris Beard just signed an extension, is divorced and his kids live with their mom in Lubbock. I think that was a dead end.
