Tom Allen is an asshole. He was a raving lunatic in last year's game. That cheap shot shit comes from the head coach. Winovich apparently out with a broken collarbone.

Frustrating game - but at least we found a solid field goal kicker. The Indiana cheap shots were pissing me off. I'm sure they pissed the team off as well. The defense finally woke up a bit in the second half. As much as I like Don Brown, his strategy in this game almost killed us. The linebackers were rushing the QB on the edges all game That lead to easy passes over the middle, and QB runs and scrambles up the gut with no one there. The middle of the field was wide open all game, and IU was smart enough to see it.

Here's my take on the injuries:
Bush, Hudson and Long all left the game with cramps but all of them returned. You might ask how can guys get cramps when it's cold? In the heat, perspiration produces some water loss but that's not the half of it. Insensible water loss from respiration is the primary cause of water loss. The colder it is, the more dense the air being breathed in and out is, the more water is carried off through respiration.
Berkely Edwards. The big screen showed the hit about 3X. It was egregious contrary to talen't's take. The defender left his feet, launched himself and aimed the crown of his helmet directly underneath Edward's chin. It was an intentional move intended to injure Edwards. No doubt about it. Tom Allen has an attitude on defense like Narduzzi. WInovich and Edwards were victimized. Don't give me the "it's football" bull shit on this one. Football is a violent game but when it is played in specific circumstances like it was last night by IU's defense, you can die or suffer career ending injuries. There are rules to prevent that. It appears to me that Allen coaches to disregard them like Narduzzi did at MSU. I think the evidence of that is irrefutable. Period.
There are two medical aspects, or mechanisms of injury, to an injury like this: (1) Hyperflexion of the cervical spine. The head is forced back and the posterior portions of the cervical vertebrae compress. The C1 vertebrae holds the odontoid process - your head swivels on this. An odontoid fracture causes death from respiratory failure or permanent upper and lower extremity paralysis - quadraplegia - in a high percentage of cases. C6-C2 compression fractures are only a a bit less catastrophic producing various degrees of sensory and motor function loss. (2) Contra-coupe injury. This where the brain sloshes around inside the skull producing injury. The worst kind is tothe brain stem. Shaken Baby Syndrome is a common mechanism of brain injury. So are hits like this. Unless there is bleeding or swelling, you won't know of the extent of injury until stuff like memory loss occurs, personality changes appear. It's a shitty injury to deal with. There's a chance Edwards will deal with this above and beyond concussion symptoms whihc are closely related.
We have no reliable information that Edwards hasn't suffered some level of motor function loss. That he reportedly has sensory function (feeling) is good news, it's not all of it yet. We will probably here something next week because of what fans saw and will, rightfully, push hard to know. I expect Harbaugh will say something in his presser on Monday.
Winovich. Not having a fractured clavicle is good news but that probably isn't all of it. When you compress the shoulder in that manner (a dirty, fragrantly unnecessary hit, with the clear intent to injure and not called as a foul by grossly incompetent officiating), usually causes the AC joint to separate. I've described this before. Pretty sure that's what Gary was suffering from, not a Labrum tear. We saw how long it took to get him back. So, not out of the woods with Winovich and Harbaugh will say nothing about it during the coming week - or at least it would surprise me if he commented one way or the other.
Edit: Berkely Edwards is out of the hospital and is fine per his tweet. He thanked everyone for checking up on him ..... pheeeeew.
Edit: Also just noted ...... JBB, per Harbaugh, "has been working through something; thought he could go but couldn't." Still nothing solid on Winovich.Last edited by Jeff Buchanan; November 18, 2018, 01:16 PM.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. Winovich and #72 were getting chippy all game. Winovich had his own little bullshit play and as things escalated, he got the worse of it.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?
Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

I don't understand targeting. I saw the Indiana player hit Edwards on the shoulder with his helmet, but it wasn't the top of his helmet. I thought targeting was using the top (crown) of your helmet to hit an opposing player in the head. Edwards had his hands down and allowed #34 to hit him full force in the right chest/shoulder area.
Wolverines running back Berkley Edwards has feeling, and is moving all extremities after taking a hard hit against Indiana

From the Stands:
As Brian had predicted, this wasn't a completely a slow motion blow out but it was a slow motion win. It was painful to watch with Red Zone play-calling and, contributing to a greater extent beyond that, execution, getting a C-. Patterson was off a bit last night like he has not been before. At least he appeared to me to be. He was 16/28/1 for 257, 1 TD and 1 INT. He also ran - cringe producing - 68 yards. He also got victimized by dropped passes that were in the zone but not caught like they have been getting caught.
On the Red-Zone play-calling. Two things. M got predictable and I'm not sure they weren't tipping the play by formation. IU got too many perfect fits into the gaps where Higdon or Evans were running to. So, either Tom Allen had his players watch film for tendencies and M obliged or M was tipping the POA by formation or line movement. There was one play I recall that was a perfect counter run to the left (back side) when the play side was to the right and so was line movement. The IU DL was also mistakenly slanting in that direction so ....... easy TD run. This play came after at least three consecutive run plays off the play side that was on the right for little to no gain. That gets frustrating but there's a reason for it. The counter usually works.
At some point, JBB left the game and I'm not sure it was injury related. Watched a good deal of replay and he lined up at LT a couple of times and it looked like he was playing well. Next thing Spinnalis was in at RT????. I thought the line play was very good. TE blocking was abysmal ..... there were several outside speed rushes that got pressure on Patterson. The TEs are usually supposed to pick this up when the Ts are occupied. I'm not sure that this wasn't bad play design or failure to recognize what IU's D does well or something new that Allen introduced for this game. There was a ton of it and on pass plays this put Shea under pressure or back side pursuit got to the RBs. It should be noted that IU's S play was the best I've seen from an opponent to date. There were plenty of plays when Higdon, Wilson or Evans got to the second level, no LBs in sight and the Ss made sure the play went for 7-10 yards instead of a TD. Poor TE blocking probably played a part here as well. I'll leave this kind of nitty gritty to others who are better at it than I am. I just know it wasn't good.
Moody.
Credit Mike Debord for punishing what Don Brown does. IU repeatedly and successfully ran slants into the middle of the field at 10-15 yards running these plays out of 4 and 5 receivers in spread concepts. The front 7 are trying to pressure Ramsey and Brown makes extensive use of the LBs in various combos to do that so, they've vacated their spots. I thought IU's offense purposefully invited 5 and 6 man rushes, made Brown and his players greedy. They got had. Vertical routes took out the CBs and the Ss were conveniently occupied by various out routes clearing the middle of the field. This kind of passing route is what Ramsey does well. So I have to ask, if you've got a QB who does a good job at quick throws like Ramsey does, wouldn't you back off on having your LBs occupied at the LOS so they can cover this middle zone a bit more effectively. Geeeeze, these receivers were repeatedly wide open so, that tells me it's less of a player bust than it is scheme and what the players are coached to do. As well, Ramsey got a couple big chunk runs and Stevie Scott, an incredibly talented RB, also had some big plays out of these spread formations. Notably, Brown had his players ready for the play that Rutgers ran successfully v. M when IU tried it with Scott.
Finally, Ramsey uncharacteristically dropped some deep shots right into the basket to his big receivers. He missed some too but he was successful doing this way more than I anticipated he would be. None of these plays were defensive busts but the best of them got a receiver one on one with Metellus. He did a good job but he's not as good at this as Hill and Long are. They were solid. I think Hill gave one up but less on him than on a perfect throw and catch. That happens.
I don't think Harbaugh felt at all in control of this game until M went up 28-17 on Moody's toe. I also don't think he, the coaching staff or the players panicked. They finished and did it well. There was a great opportunity for the defense to lose it's cool after Winovich then Edwards went out on cheap shots. They didn't. That was impressive. Lesson for fans: Don't panic over this game
Looking forward. The IU offense is very much like osu's so, good practice. I think Ramsey played better in this game than I've seen Haskins play during the season. Both QBs have a great short passing game. Brown has to figure out if it is more important to get pressure on Haskins in an attempt to create chaos in the back field like he likes to do or play less aggressively to protect the middle of the field against a dink and dunk happy osu offense. Paris Campbell is a major threat here. I think Weber and Dobbins can produce the same kind of run success that Stevie Scott did alone. For what ever reasons - November, stuff on film for opponents to see, worn out players, etc. M's run and Pass D aren't as stout as they have been. I thought IU's LBs and Ss were way better in this game than I've seen from those same osu units .... we should be taking talent's criticisms of Greg Schiano seriously and not as sandbagging. The osu defense has issues. I'll have more to say about this in the appropriate Game Week thread.Last edited by Jeff Buchanan; November 18, 2018, 01:22 PM.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. Sure Edwards got blown up, but I don't think the defender tried to intentionally hurt him. I think the kid saw a chance to take a shot and make a play and took it.
The targeting call was the correct call, though.I feel like I am watching the destruction of our democracy while my neighbors and friends cheer it on
