I am a pheasant plucker
I am a pheasant pluckers son
And I’ll be plucking pheasant.....
.... until the pheasant pluckings done
"...when Hibernian won the Scottish Cup final and that celebration, Sunshine on Leith? I don’t think there’s a better football celebration ever in the game.”
Reminds me of a cadence call in the military.
"I'm not the butcher but the butcher man's son, I sling the beef till the butcher man come".
Couldn't sing that one around the housing area though.....
I think people forget that Stanford was drafted on to the first 0-16 team in NFL history. They were that bad. Cleveland may have matched that a few years ago but that defense had some talent. The 0-16 Lions were incredibly bad.
I think Stafford’s lack of success can definitely be attributed to a lack of talent around him and the coaching. Schwartz, Caldwell, and Patricia were not good. Combine that with the terrible running games and terrible defenses thAt Stafford has had to carry most of his career, his lack of success is not surprising.
But, but, QB's (or any player for that matter) can't be ruined by an organization. That was an all the rage reply when I saw through why Joe Harrington struggled in DET.
'Member? (not picking on you in particular Tom)
I bet Joe wishes he had a receiver that was even 3/4ths of one CJ to work with or had 1/8th of the weaponZ given to StaTford in his tenure. Or the same set of coaching/coordinators for more than 1 season. Or not having to rely on a BackusUP or a Rollover at the two most crucial positions on the OL, ever, in Detroit.
The only thing people are giving you shit about here is your inconsistency.
If the Lions franchise "ruined" Harrington (which I will readily say happened, we can disagree on the degree it actually hurt Harrington's career, but it absolutely did), then why didn't it "ruin" Stafford and all the Lions losses are on his shoulders? The Lions didn't miraculously become a better organization. They are just as incompetent of a franchise now as they were then.
Don't bother with that Harrington argument with Gonz, I've tried it for years and he doesn't acknowledge his hypocrisy. The basic fact is Gonz was a big Harrington supporter that was butt hurt about his treatment so he has never, ever given Stafford any credit.
For the record, I did defend Harrington while he was here. I do think Stafford is a better QB than Harrington.
I think Tannehill is a good example of how a highly rated QB coming out of college, in the wrong situation, can look terrible on one team but on another team can look very good.
The Lions organization is the constant when it comes to being bad.
Lots of speculation among sportscasters lately that Stafford could (and should) be in a different uniform next year. All of them think he deserves a chance with a better organization.
This morning's mention was the Patriots.
I just don't see it happening. It's not like the Lions to let go of their marquee players...and even if it's really up to the next GM, I think any candidate is going to plan on building around Stafford, not blowing it up and starting over. He's pretty highly regarded around the league, despite what Lions fans think.
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing him move on for a fresh start. I'd like to see what he can do out from under the Big Top.
The only thing missing from that Marvin Jones touchdown reversal is that it wasn't a first round playoff game.
I keep him for one more year, draft a QB and then trade him next off season when his cap hit is much lower.
You could do it this off season with a post June 1st designation. I just think if you draft a guy his value (in a trade) goes down because the other clubs know you almost have to get rid of him.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.
With Stafford he has to want a fresh start, he has given no indications that he does. He actually wants to lead the Lions to success, when dummies say he has never wanted to be a leader they couldn't be more wrong. We look at it with jaded eyes and most of us think that the Lions are a lost cause. They may be a lost cause but he doesn't think so, at least there is nothing at all in his demeanor or public statements that indicate that.
People are focusing on cap hits and what they could get for him, the biggest factor is whether he would welcome a move. No team is going to trade for a quarterback of his stature if he doesn't want to go.
