I do think the hey day of the straight back pocket passer is gone. Manning and Brady probably are the last of the greats.
Quarterbacks today need a scrambling ability to get away from defensive pressure.
In my opinion a very good to great QB has these abilities:
Intelligence
Arm strength
Mobility
Leadership
I would grade Stafford like this:
Intelligence: B-
Arm strength A
Mobility C
Leadership C
On the leadership grade I am basing on his inconsistent play on the field.
He is a quiet leader. That works if your a great player, aka Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson. But since he isn't great it won't work
When you listen to him giving the pregame talk to the team, you here a guy who just doesn't sound confident in himself, or what he's saying.
I just isn't his bag to be a vocal leader. However I do remember early on in his first year, on the sidelines he did have some fire when talking to the O line.
I think being a Lion has fucked up his psyche.

It holds true no matter the era...If your QB can't set his feet and deliver the ball hash to hash, you're likely to struggle. Didn't matter who Denver saw(Brady or Newton) they were unlikely to play well.
On that note, Tom Brady at QB is all Detroit needs to win? Yeah, see that Denver game again...that's x16 here the way they shit the bed.

On the pocket passer I mentioned, I was referring to a player with very little mobility. I think newton, luck, rodgers as pocket passers first but who can transfer to a runner if the situation arises. So I guess I meant a pure pocket passer with no or little mobility. I don't think spread offense QB's will ever succeed in NFL if they can't stand in the pocket and deliver an accurate pass.

Yes I agree that accuracy with arm strength is the ultimate, but I was posting a quick post and not going into every detail that a qb needs to be a benefit to his team. So I will add accuracy to my grades. Stafford grades a C on accuracy. Also the list wasn't in order of importance. If I had that I would have it 1. Intelligence 2. Accuracy 3. Leadership, 4 mobility, 5 arm strength

Did you watch the video? Do you need me to tell you what the score was in that "win in the playoffs" for your hero?
He was another quarterback suffering from inadequate blocking. It can happen that way.
It's OK, we know it's too confusing for you to comprehend.Last edited by dpatnod; May 10, 2016, 07:45 PM.Lions Fans.
