        • He's definitely writing his opinion, question still valid.

          • I think from now on, all potentially great QBs should be shaving their asscheeks. NO MORE stubble bum.

            • I have waffled when it comes to Stafford. At first I thought wow, the Lions finally have a QB. Then for years I thought he was stat padding waste. He brought me back a few years with his comebacks, but damn, watching this year I have come to the realization he's not very good. Sure, at times he throws a really good looking pass. But, he makes terrible decisions a large percentage of the time. I would never suggest to play frickin' Matt Cassell, but the Lions should definitely get someone else next year...even if it means eating his contract.

His contract climbs to $30M next year. He's not getting cut. One can only hope that some team comes calling for a trade of his services.

Sorry, I can't say anymore with a straight face.

                  • IF the Lions offered Stafford up for trade, I can PROMISE you a handful of teams would come calling.

Because as awful as you think Stafford is, at least 20 starting QBs in the NFL are worse. Go ahead and actually look at the starters who took the field yesterday and be able to honestly tell me that Stafford is worse than half of them. You'd be a liar.

                      • He was in no way wrong with his facts or opinion.

I noticed you didn't touch on that aspect. ;)

                        • Yeah, that's a way to do it. I've never been a fan of how the Lions as an organization has "coddled" Stafford in that sense, often going out of their way to acquire QBs without any real starter potential in lieu of those that may, specifically to avoid the dreaded "QB controversy." My feeling has always been if Stafford is so weak willed that he can't perform with someone heating up his seat a little bit then he shouldn't be behind center to begin with.

                          • I'd have no problem whatsoever taking a QB in the draft. But an emotional reaction of "cutting" or "trading" Stafford with no alternative or no guarantee that there might be more upside available I am absolutely not on board with. The cap hit is an insane amount of money and totally unrealistic, imo.

Stafford couldn't argue too much about a QB controversy because he is paid so much as to compensate for other parts of the roster and he simply isn't doing that at the moment. I've always been pro-Stafford but I would have no problem with a suitable replacement being identified and eased in. The emphasis is on suitable. And I'd keep Stafford a while until they got reps.

                            • Most teams don't have any worthwhile backup that is going to challenge the starter. Maybe 20-30 years ago that was the case but its very hard to justify any high draft pick on a QB who is likely to sit the bench. KC hit paydirt with Mahomes no doubt but he was still the 10th pick in the draft and Smith was never thought to be the long term answer there. They didn't draft Mahomes to compete with Smith to spur Smith on to better things, they drafted Mahomes because they thought he was a great QB. The Packers didn't draft Rodgers to spur Brett Favre on with competition, they found value in a guy who was supposed to go at the top of the draft and somehow fell to late in the 1st round to the silly Jeff Tedford QB tag. The Patriots took a flyer on Brady in the 5th round but it was just a flyer.

The carousel happens because if you are trying to get a QB, normally the pick is going to have to be in the top 10. If you are getting another QB, you are getting rid of Stafford and tearing the whole thing down to the studs. The way they have played, that is not out of the question.

                              • You had Mayfield sitting behind Taylor, you've had Lamar Jackson sitting behind Flacco, Mahomes did it behind Smith. Smith was only a bit older than Stafford when Mahomes was drafted and had been under centre there for 5 years. I don't think it's without precedent, but I also don't think there's any appetite to replace Stafford from within the organisation.
