Jerry Rice, a great wide receiver, probably the best to ever play the game. But he was NOT the best player on the San Fransisco team. You might recognize these guys, Joe Montana...Steve Young. Lets say you replace Montana/Young with Harrington/Mitchell/Stafford, all of a sudden Rice does become the best player on the team - how many super bowls does he participate in?

If you look at Irvin stat wise, he was good but he certainly was not the best. What made Irvin special (Aikman too, Tony Romo has far better stats than Aikman), is that he always rose to the occasion, when the team needed the clutch catch, he got it. The reason his nickname was the THE PLAYMAKER

Montana looked a lot like Stafford when he wasn't throwing to Rice. The Rice led Raiders kicked the Montanna led Chefs az. AND went to the Superbowl.
