  • That trade is crazy.

    • This has to be the complete opposite of what we think of new owner syndrome.

      • Reading Marc Stein, the Mavs did the deal because they didn't trust Doncic's dedication. He's due for a record-breaking contract and they got cold feet because he was consistently out of condition and would take longer than they wanted coming back from various injuries.

The entire transaction was conducted in secret between the two organizations. The Mavs apparently did not shop around for a better deal.

They traded him for a player who is known for missing time due to injury.

You know, there was this player called Shaquille O'Neal who also was well-known for not being the most dedicated to the game and taking his time coming back from injuries.

I suspect that history will not treat the Mavericks well on this trade

        • If the Mavericks felt that, they should have gotten more. This is an own goal. As bad as Troy Weaver was as a GM he is miles better than Nico Harrison.

          • Ryen Russillo put it pretty succinctly - Doncic could be dribbling up and down the court with a lit cigarette in his mouth and you still pay him the max because he’s one of the few guys in the world that can makes you a playoff threat every year and he’s already taken flawed teams to the finals and WCF.

Oh, by the way, because he was traded, Doncic is no longer eligible for the Supermax contract. So even better for the Lakers.

            • The Internet is full of bogus trade proposals that get aggregated and none were more bogus than this trade.

              • Nico Harrison has accomplished the impossible

He has supplanted Jerry Jones as the worst GM in Dallas

                • I'm just trying to process how in any way this trade makes sense for Dallas. I simply cannot fathom that they couldn't have gotten a better deal than this.

                  • I just think it is new owner syndrome. They didn't want to pay the Supermax and he rubbed them the wrong way.

                    • OKC has a boatload of 1sts and would likely trade anyone outside SGA, which would include Holmgren. If I'm the Spurs, I trade everything outside Wemby. Every first, every first swap, everything -- to pair Wemby & Luka for the next 7 years.

For Lions fans, this is roughly the equivalent of the Lions trading Hutchinson for Tyreek Hill.

                      • As a Pistons fan who lives in Southern CA, this is brutal. My hate for the Lakers has been hard wired since I was a kid in Canton in the 1980’s. Laker fans are already insufferable enough, and the fans and media around here are taking victory laps.

I'd say more like trading Gibbs for Lane Johnson. It's not that Lane is a bad player, it's that he's got maybe a couple more years left and you just traded away one of the most impact young players in the league for a guy who, ironically would benefit most from having Lane Johnson in front of him.

Not bad, but i like mine better. Gibbs is really good, but he's not franchise-altering good like Hutch & Doncic.

Additionally, supposedly Doncic's trade is somewhat about his injury

                            • Neither of those examples are good because football is such a team sport. Guys like Doncic make you a relevant franchise all by themselves.

Neither of them are exact, for the reason you stated... but there's not really a particularly Detroit-sports related analogue that is usable. I guess you could say the closest analogy would be like, I dunno, the Pistons trading Grant Hill for, like I dunno, Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace.

                                ...

Wait... stop. Lemme come in again...
