Cade is having surgery to repair his left shin, and will miss the rest of the season, and hopes to be back in action to start the 2023/24 season.

Since the season is a wash, just hope that the Pistons either get the #1 overall pick or the #2 overall pick.

Cade Cunningham undergoing season-ending surgery

Cade Cunningham's second NBA season is over.

The Pistons star point guard plans to have season-ending surgery on his left shin, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Cunningham had held off on the decision for a while, hoping that rest would allow the injury to heal on its own. But it's become apparent that surgery is his most sensible option.


The injury to his shin dates back to last season and reportedly flared up again in the offseason. In the past, Cunningham has been able to manage the pain and inflammation with rest.

Surgery should put an end to that cycle. Cunningham is expected to make a full recovery by the start of training camp next season.

The former first overall pick was off to a strong start to his second season in Detroit, averaging 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists in 12 games.

Rookie fifth overall pick Jaden Ivey will continue to carry a heavier load in Cunningham's absence, alongside former seventh overall pick Killian Hayes.

It's ok. They're at least a season (or two) behind where the Lions are now. A good year to be picking at the top of the draft though. If we could luck (goodness I hate these stupid lotteries) into having the top pick (as we have the worst record in the league) we would be on our way with a great team. Young, but with great players.

Detroit Pistons: Killian Hayes is no longer afraid


One of the real positives of this season has been the development of Killian Hayes, as he had a horrendous start but has since turned his season and career around.

It’s not just that Hayes is putting up numbers overall, but he is playing with confidence that we’ve never seen before. A couple of times last night I had to adjust my eyes to make sure I wasn’t watching a young James Harden, as Killian was taking and making some high degree of difficulty shots and doing it with poise and confidence

That included a dagger in the overtime period where he stepped back, pump faked, got the defender in the air and then drilled the 3-point shot to give the Pistons a four point lead. He’s controlling the offense, being the “quarterback” that Dwane Casey envisioned, playing tough defense and just doesn’t look like the same guy.

Losing your franchise player for the season sucks, but one of the positives that has come out of it is that Hayes has gotten increased minutes and made the most of them. He might now be the most promising player from the Pistons’ 2020 draft class, and when you look at where he was at the beginning of the season, this transformation has been nothing short of miraculous.

Is there a correlation between Hayes rise and the fall of Bey? Also Ivey doesnt seem to be as good when paired with Hayes....I'm still not sure how this is going to work out with 3 consecutive PG picks with the top pick...I still think Troy will have to move one of them but which one?

No one can deny that the value of Killian Hayes has gone up a lot during Cade's absence. That is all for the good. It would be interesting if the Pistons end up with the second pick in the draft, though. Scoot Henderson is projected as almost the sure #2 pick overall. He is a guard. Of course, we should take him. There is a lot of height coming into the NBA in this years draft, and the Pistons really do need somebody to paid with Duren on the inside.

Shout out to Jalen Duren for getting 19 rebounds last night. Pretty good for a 19-year-old who just turned 19.

But all are capable of playing 1-3 so it's not oil and water. Again, they're all very young. The hang up is the shooting. As long as they can knock down open shots and defend they should be able to play together. All are unselfish.

One issue I see with the team is that they seem to not know how to defend. Today you move your feet and stay in fron of your man. They do a lot of reaching and get called for a ton of fouls.

Exasperating that, they don't consistently block out for rebounds and give opponents a lot of extra chances at the ball.

Regardless, these issues are youth related and time will help.

I think there is a pretty real possibility that when Cade gets back next year you might start have a starting lineup of Hayes/Ivey/Cade/Bojan/Beef Stew. And run real uptempo offense when it is there.

Then in the halfcourt lots of movement and passing there should be a poor defender at one the opposing 1-3 spots and exploit the hell out that matchup.
