LOL picking 7th... of course. The only thing more obvious is picking 8th. Recent history of Pistons 1st Rd picks in "purgatory draft range" suggests there is hardly anything to be optimistic about.
2009 - 15th, Austin Daye
2010 - 7th, Greg Monroe
2011 - 8th, Brandon Knight
2012 - 9th, Andre Drummond
2013 - 8th, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
2015 - 8th, Stanley Johnson
2016 - 18th, Henry Ellenson
2017 - 12th, Luke Kennard
2019 - 15th, Sekou Doumbouya

The Pistons got put pretty much exactly where the odds said they would.
Detailed 2025 NBA lottery odds. View the current odds for each lottery spot to get specific picks. See the chances that a pick is traded based on position.
They had twice the chances of landing 7th as any other spot in the draft. I dunno how you can say they were screwed when they landed right where they were expected to.
The Pistons need to stop fighting for the 8 seed and outright TANK. Look at Golden State; there is NO penalty for shamelessly quitting for the season.Last edited by chemiclord; August 21, 2020, 10:29 AM.

Right, the Sam Hinkie method is the way to go. 76ers would have had more success if not for injuries.

Either way, Pistons move from 5th to 7th. It's disappointing.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill

In my opinion, if there was ever a draft to not be disappointed for sliding, it’s this one. The “consensus” top 3 are Edwards, Ball, and Wiseman, all three of whom come with almost as many questions as strengths. I honestly think that the talent pool from 1 through probably 9 or 10 is pretty close.
We’ll see how things shake out, but I think the Pistons could be looking at a choice between Hayes and Haliburton at 7.Last edited by BJK; August 21, 2020, 12:24 PM.

Drafting 7th was the largest piece of the pie at 26.7% (... 73.3% chance that wouldn't happen). There was also a 64% chance the Pistons would be drafting higher than 7th.
Either way, Pistons move from 5th to 7th. It's disappointing.
While it was pretty much even odds between finishing higher and lower than 5th, the biggest distribution of odds had them falling (the combined odds for 6-7 are greater than any four other slots put together, for example). If you were to run a random distribution, the Pistons would have been picking 6 or 7 in a significant majority of simulations. It sucks, but it's also expected. The Pistons need to tank harder. Just completely make a mockery of the season, because there is no penalty whatsoever for doing so.
Golden State understood this, and completely shut it down. They are now picking second just a year removed from the NBA Finals.
And as for Sam Hinkie's "Process," it sucks... but it's also the most "reliable" way out for trash franchises. Because if a given franchise could make shrewd moves, find diamonds in the rough, and develop internally... well... they wouldn't be in NBA Purgatory to begin with. The Pistons keep picking 7-9th because they continue to miss on the players that WERE available to them.Last edited by chemiclord; August 21, 2020, 05:49 PM.

Hinkie put them in a good position via his “Process”, but I’m not impressed with the end product. They had as many (if not more) lottery misses than hits. Embid is special but has been injury prone. Simmons is talented but can’t shoot (and Brandon Ingram may turn into the better player). They missed on Fultz, Noel, and Okafor. Dario Saric is solid, but a role player at best (now for the Suns). They cleared a massive amount of cap space and spent that on max type deals for guys like Tobias Harris and Al Horford. With Boston likely completing the series sweep tomorrow, the Sixers seemed to have locked themselves back into being a middle of the road Eastern Conference team. I’d expect to see a coaching change there.

They fired Hinkie. They then went with Colangelo and Brand and those two guys fucked it all up. They traded valuable picks for Tobias, only to then give him $180 million. They butchered all the good Hinkie left them with.

Pistons High On Tyrese Haliburton?
September 30th, 2020 at 4:00pm CST by Luke Adams- Projected top-10 pick Tyrese Haliburton said today that he has interviewed with the Knicks, Warriors, and Pistons so far during the pre-draft process (video link via Ian Begley of SNY.tv). Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv (Twitter link) has heard that the Pistons – who hold the No. 7 pick – “really like” Haliburton.

Jerami Grant Expected To Draw Interest From Pistons, Suns, Hawks
October 1st, 2020 at 5:31pm CST by Luke Adams
After a strong showing in the playoffs, Nuggets forward Jerami Grant is expected to turn down his $9.3MM player option in favor of free agency. A recent report from Mike Singer of The Denver Post indicated that there appears to be mutual interest in a new deal between the Nuggets and Grant, who could command upwards of $14-16MM per year.
However, Denver is expected to face stiff competition for Grant’s services. According to Singer, the Pistons, Suns, and Hawks are among the clubs that are expected to express interest in the forward once free agency begins.
As Singer notes, Detroit and Atlanta will have plenty of cap room available, and Phoenix has a path to open up space as well. All three teams could make contract offers worth significantly more than the mid-level (projected to be worth about $9.3MM).
Pistons general manager Troy Weaver and Suns head coach Monty Williams are both former Thunder employees, so they’re very familiar with Grant, who played in Oklahoma City from 2016-19 before being traded to the Nuggets last July. The Hawks have no obvious connection to the 26-year-old through their front office or coaching staff, but he’d be a nice fit on a squad that had the NBA’s third-worst defensive rating this season.
Of course, the Nuggets will hold Grant’s Bird rights, allowing them to go over the cap to make a competitive offer for the former Syracuse standout. Head coach Michael Malone told reporters today that Grant is “a big part of our future,” as Eric Spyropoulos of Nuggets.com relays.
Grant averaged 12.0 PPG and 3.5 RPG on .478/.389/.750 shooting in 71 games (26.6 MPG) for the Nuggets in 2019/20 and became a full-time starter in the postseason as the team made a run to the Western Conference Finals. His outside shooting ability and defensive versatility will make him one of this offseason’s most popular free agents.
It’s worth noting that the Suns and Pistons are also expected to have interest in free agent point guard Fred VanVleet, while Phoenix and Atlanta have been linked to sharpshooter Davis Bertans. The Hawks can afford to pursue multiple top free agents, but the Suns and Pistons are less likely to fit two pricey new contracts in under the cap. If they go after another top free agent like VanVleet or Bertans instead, that could take one of Grant’s potential suitors out of the mix.

NBA draft is in 5 days. NBA free agency is in 7 days.
Assuming the Pistons will make some notable moves to the roster in the next week or so. Anyone have thoughts? Need to get some of the OGs back in here like Kstat, Jaadam, nwbrooklyn, etc for some Pistons discussion...
Heard the Pistons are interested in Patrick Williams from FSU.... kind of scares me because there are some similarities to Stanley Johnson with that pick idea ... so what's the point.
Also, the Pistons are possibly looking into trading up for Ball.AAL 2023 - Alim McNeill
