I read something in one of the Pistons forums that said - Stanley Johnson is developing a jump shot that’s going to turn him into a superstar.

There’s not much analysis that we can say there. Some young NBA players can develop a jump shot. Others can’t. It’s a total unknown going forward that will determine Ausar’s ceiling in the NBA.

As for Marcus Sasser. Always a thorn in my side as someone that regularly rooted against Houston over the last several years. Quality college player for that Houstan program. Seems likable. I don’t feel confident to say Sasser will be more than a quality backup rotational guard as a best case scenario. Pistons certainly need efficient shot makers.

I was good with both picks. I think Ausar’s physical talent (6’7” in shoes, 7’0” wingspan, 218 lbs., +++ athleticism) coupled with his reported high basketball IQ and outstanding character/work ethic will ultimately lead to him being at least a good player. Might take some time though. Weaver tends to be reserved in what he says about guys to keep expectations in check, but he went as far as saying that Ausar reminds him of Andre Iguoudala as a young player. I don’t think anyone will be disappointed if he becomes even remotely close to Iggy.

Sasser should bring shooting, defense and physical/mental toughness. He’s 6’2” and around 200 lbs., with a 6’7” wingspan, so the lack of height doesn’t bother me. I actually like that he is a 22 year old, 4 year college guy, as he lands in the same age group as the other core players. And I love that his 4 years came under Kelvin Sampson, meaning he’ll be ready to play. Definitely a “below the rim” type of athlete, but from what I’ve seen, he’s got a really strong handle that he uses to create space to get his shot off.

This is the one and only post about the Pistons pick. That should tell you how thrilled the fan base is. We drafted a SG that can’t shoot to play SF. I hope I’m wrong with this kid but I don’t see it

I leaned towards Whitmore at #5 as well. He fell due to an apparent combination of medical red flags and poor individual workout rumors. There was some buzz about Whitemore falling yesterday prior to the draft.

Houston could get value with that pick. As the Nuggets did when Porter Jr. slipped in that draft due to medicals.

I would sign Reaves to a big offer sheet and try to deal some of the surplus bigs. I'm not sure what they are doing, it's just bets on high ceiling players who can't shoot.

Weaver really has seemed to run this show in a "let's throw shit at the wall and see what sticks" method... which is fine for Year 1, but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to see some sort of identity by Year 4.

It seems like he had more.of.a plan in year 1. Maybe he will surprise us next week. The way it's going, Steve Yzerman's glacial pace looks like warp speed compared to this.

Troy seems to be better at acquiring talent or assets that he can flip later, more than building a team....He clearly likes very athletic players and hopes they learn to shoot....What's funny is the least athletic player on the team is the best shooter and scorer (for now anyway).

It looks like building an NBA team is harder then building a 54 man NFL team.

The NFL is probably the easiest of the 4 sports to rebuild a team to respectability. You get instant production from your draft picks you are competent. The other sports have a long lag time before you can count on the draft picks. That's the main reason why people have gotten so frustrated with the Lions. But so far, so good with Holmes and Campbell.
