  • I will settle if they don't get stuck with a contract they have to stretch out like they did with JSmoove and Leuer.

    • I'd be more excited about cap space if Rich Paul was involved in the front office rather than Arn Tellem.

It reminds me of the QBs in the draft this year. IF the team can be disciplined to wait for someone worth it, everything will be fine. If they rush it because it's burning a hole in their pocket, their growth will be equally stymied. Very few GMs/Presidents across sports (except for baseball) have that discipline.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

The problem with basketball is the rules of the game don't allow you to sit and wait with cap space. The rules make it that when have the money you have to spend the money. You can't sit out if the free agents are weak. And once you are at the cap you have to re-sign your free agents so you don't lose a piece. All of the potential available free agents get locked up because the incumbent team can pay more and they don't gain space by letting the free agent go.

          • But, you can also use that space for trades. I know it doesn't exactly wash like in the NFL. But they could do that to get some picks.

I would rather get some picks than do what Joe Dumars did in '09 by signing stiffs like Charlie V. and Ben Gordon.

At least with some draft picks, if they pan out, you can use them, and if not, they can be traded or cut.

              • Dumars could have announced he's done it before and he can do it again. He could have started a rebuild and no one would have batted an eye. Instead he hung his hat on Gordon, Eyebrows and Josh Smith. That was all she wrote.

I guess in theory that works, but those trades are not as common as they were in 00s. The best bet is to pay for short term contracts for players where you can have tradeable contracts.

Dumars didn't get stupid before he signed those contracts, he got extremely lucky with the previous contracts. Wallace, Atkins, Billups and McDyess we're all big gambles that paid off. But you aren't going to bat 100 percent on gambles like that.

Joe D was smart, he built a powerhouse, but that kind of luck is not sustainable. Anybody who said that they knew signing Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace were building blocks for a championship team after Grant Hill left isnlying to your face.

                      • Decent article from JE3 of The Athletic predicting the future of the Detroit Pistons' FAs. See below for his estimates on % chance they return.

                        Marvin Bagley III
                        Contract status: Restricted free agent
                        Odds he returns: 70-80 percent
Projected contract range: 3 years/$21-24 million

                        Hamidou Diallo
Contract status: Team option, $5.2 million
                        Odds he returns: 100 percent

                        Carsen Edwards
Contract status: Team option, $1.8 million
                        Odds he returns: 0-30 percent

                        Luka Garza
                        Contract status: Unrestricted free agent
                        Odds he returns: 30 percent
                        Projected contract range: Minimum deal

                        Frank Jackson
Contract status: Team option, $3.15 million
                        Odds he returns: 100 percent

                        Cory Joseph
Contract status: Player option, $5.15 million
                        Odds he returns: 100 percent

                        Rodney McGruder
                        Contract status: Unrestricted free agent
                        Odds he returns: 50 percent

                        • Aside from Bagley, Diallo and Garza I wouldn't shed a tear for losing the rest. I openly want them to go away from Frank Jack. He could be awesome. But he justis not consistent enough and is terrible on the defensive end. They could easily keep him but hopefully they add enough talent to push him to the end of the bench.

                          • Brunson has been really damned good offensively. That's fairly interesting but it also means Cade is stuck guarding the oppositions best guard the entire game with Brunson's defensive limitations.

I've been way down on Hayes but man he finished the season on a strong note. I hope that kid builds on that and turns into something going forward.

Bagley is definitely coming back. That was a good trade for the Pistons.

                              • I've always liked Brunson as a college player (popping threes vs. UM right in our faces) but I just can't get over his lack of size. 6'1" is just too small in a league where having switchable wings is in vogue. Bigger guards are going to get switched onto him and they will work him.

We lucked out with Cade being a 6'6" willing defender. You just ruin that defensive bonus by putting a 6'1" dude next to him. I just don't like the fit on the defensive end.
