Of course if they just drafted Melo things might have been different. Or not getting screwed over because of the hard cap not being able to resign Okur or if Kobe wouldn’t have nixed a trade at the last minute that would have made him a Piston.

Either way we had a great run
I'm not hating on Joe D, he's my all time 2nd favorite Piston (Isiah Thomas #1, but I'm glad that he wasn't the GM when Joe Dumars was), but it was time, and Joe D didn't adjust to the newer offensive rules that the NBA implemented after the '05 Finals between Detroit and San Antonio.

If we could've drafted Wade, and then later on kept Middleton when we did actually draft him, and drafted the Greek Freak and Kawhi Leonard when they came out--and developed them as they turned out to be, we'd at least be in the conversation for Championships just like San Antonio was from 97-98 to 18-19.

    • Everybody was gonna take Darko.

Middleton (obviously), Giannis, Paul George, Kawhi, Booker, Mitchell were all missed that resulted from poor drafting ... but a lot of teams can say the same
WHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

      • Nobody actually knew what the outcome of the defensive rules were going to do. Joe D tried to adjust but the offensive players he tried to get weren't the type of offensive players that were going to succeed. But it wasn't obvious what type of players were going to succeed. There was a 6 or 7 year window where it wasn't apparent what those changes would produce. It wasn't until Curry and Draymond came into the league and then Steve Kerr had to be hired to figure it out. In 2009 it was commonplace to say teams that rely on the 3 had no chance to go far in the playoffs and switching on defense was frowned upon.

Joe D had a great run, but at the end he was handcuffed by ownership issues and by the fact that the game passes you by. It happens.

But, how can "The NBA Logo," Jerry West can adjust to everything that the NBA does rule wise, and he hasn't played an NBA game in nearly 50 years!

          • I assume you are talking about Jerry West in Golden State, he definitely said to not trade Steph, but I don't think he drew up some grand blueprint. And if he did have the blueprint that had Mark Jackson as the coach. That guy had no idea what he had. After they canned Jackson, their #1 target was SVG. They fell into Kerr after SVG them down. Until then most teams were still trying to assemble bully ball teams. GSW was all a happy accident. Draymond was a second round pick, Minnesota passed over Steph twice. Steph had early problems with his ankles that caused him to sign a very team friendly extension that allowed them to sign Durant with the high jump in the cap that year. Kerr came up with the offense that they used, he basically took aspects of Pitino, Nellie and 7 second Suns and adapted it to work best with the best shooting tandem in history. And with Draymond and later Durant he had the small ball 5s that could switch that Nellie never had when he played small.

Prior to 2015 nobody was saying this is how offense was going to be played for the future. It just kind of happened, now nearly every team plays this way for at least a little bit, but it's not anything you could have predicted.

West may have been a steadying hand guiding Meyers but they had a string of fortuitous events that happened to them. Much like the same way Joe D had a lot of things happen right when he took over.

If you are talking about West in Lakerland, he had the fortune of being in charge of the one team that is the free agent destination.

            • West told them not to flip Klay for Kevin Love. GS was going to make that deal. He turned out right.

              • Yeah I couldn't remember if it was Steph or Klay.

I'm not fighting you; actually we're both on the same side.

But, when he went to Memphis after leaving Lakerland, he did help make Memphis semi-relevant in the NBA.

However, you're correct on the Laker destination part. If even Jerry West can't get people to sign with Memphis, then no one can.

                  • Yeah, he did do some good with Memphis.

West is an outlier in how long he was good as an executive, most of these guys have a shelf life

Yeah, I just remembered that the late, great former Detroit Pistons GM Jack McCloskey worked with Jerry West for a few years in the late 1970's, and left for Detroit when he didn't get the LA Lakers Head Coaching gig in 1979.

                      • Would you guys do this?
                        • Houston Rockets get: First pick (Cade Cunningham), Jeremy Lamb
                        • Detroit Pistons get: Kevin Porter Jr., second and 13th picks, future conditional first-round pick
                        • Indiana Pacers get: Eric Gordon, 23rd pick
                        F#*K OHIO!!!

Houston tanked just like we did, and lost the ping pong balls, and this is one of the offers being considered? I know that it's a what if trade, but no way I'd do that trade if I was Detroit Pistons General Manager Troy Weaver.

-'Mr. Weaver has a chance to get Detroit back to what they were at the end of the '07-'08 season, right before the wheels fell off and plunged the team into the morass of mediocrity that we've been stuck in since '08-'09.

Go pick Cade and work on the other picks, and call it a day.

                            Nope.
                            Porter can't shoot.
The 13th pick could be mediocre. I think there's a huge drop off after #4.

I'd do it... but at the same time, I don't see much space between Green and Cunningham, if any.
