I think it is a combination of things. Obviously better offense, but I think the season, as it is in most pro sports, is too long. The travel schedule is brutal. It is impossible for these players to give maximum effort 100% of the time. When they do, it is amazing to watch. I think NBA players as a whole are the greatest athletes in the world, but I think they have to coast some in the regular season to survive.

    • Yeah the long schedule is #1 opponent. The fact that scheduling losses has been a long term issue is a problem in itself.

I think it's really only become a "problem" recently. In the past, nobody gave much thought to "[x] has a game off today, [y] is off this Thursday, and [z] is off next week Monday," and stuff like that. That happened all the time, and is going to continue to happen unless you shrink the season to the point where you're never playing more than twice a week. (For the record, I'd be fine with that, I suspect players would be fine with that, owners would never go for it.)

The problem was when coaches got the idea to, "I'm gonna sit [x], [y], and [z] all the same game and take one L rather than potentially handicap myself in three." I seem to recall Popovich started that trend, and made it somethings fans couldn't just handwave away. Add in a condensed schedule that should have never had that many games, and you have the disaster we had this season.

But I think we have also seen the downfall to that too. LB used to say you can un-condition a team by NOT playing guys their normal minutes. IMHO a tired guy is more apt to be hurt (cue an injury that would happen regardless).

Or the players today are as soft and weak as the rules they play under nowadays.

Sometimes you get play like the other day and it is so organically beautiful that you don't really care what the outcome was. But most of the time you get teams just launching contested shots from deep.

            • IDC who they played against. Cade is the superior prospect. Green is ok if you can't get Cade.

              • Detroit Jock City: Detroit Pistons: Cade Cunningham is the clear choice at No. 1 overall

                • I'd draft Mobley before Green. Green looks like he won't have a problem being a 20+ ppg scorer. But, the other two look like they will too AND help their teammates score more and play better defense too.

There is truth to those rumors stating that the Pistons organization is interested in Green, and Mobley but things changed the second Detroit won the lottery.

The Detroit Pistons draft room erupted the second it was announced that the organization won the lottery. Sure, it’s an exciting thing, but it’s also exciting knowing that you will be able to secure the top player in the draft, and that is Cunningham.

Cunningham averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 boards, and 3.5 assists, along with shooting a stellar 40% from beyond the arc last season. His skill-set fits perfectly to operate in Detroit’s backcourt alongside Killian Hayes. Either guard can facilitate the offense, and both are fine as off-ball guards. However, I prefer to see Hayes as a playmaker and Cunningham working in iso as a shot creator.
Green averaged 17.9 points, 4.1 boards, and 2.8 assists, along with shooting 36.5% from beyond the arc last season. All lesser than Cade.

                      • Finally, lady luck was on the side of a professional sports team in Detroit. After winning the lottery, who benefits the most from the Detroit Pistons?

Detroit Pistons: 3 players who benefit most after winning the NBA lottery

In his return, Hayes looked like an entirely different player from that tentative turnover machine he was through his first seven contests. It’s not automatic for a top-ten selection to come right in and dominate at the professional level. Hayes is living proof that, more often than not, rookie players, regardless of the sport, need time to marinate and develop before they are ready to make a positive impact in their respected lineup.

Hayes proved late as a rookie that he has what could be elite court vision. While Hayes lacks some scoring ability and is not really a shot creator, it appears he’s comfortable being a remarkable passer and facilitator. This skill-set will benefit the teams’ three-point sniper Saddiq Bey, team leader Jerami Grant and rookie Cade Cunningham.
Adding a player with Cunningham’s skill-set to this group will only help take the focus off a player like Bey. First off, Bey is and will be more than just a catch-and-shoot corner three performer. While it’s a nice attribute to have, there is plenty more in the toolbox to unlock. The Pistons will likely use Bey in the pick-and-roll far more often moving forward, and he can create his own opportunities off of the dribble.

With defenses paying close attention to the often used Jerami Grant, and the rookie phenom Cunningham, it will allow Bey to feast one-one in addition to the catch-and-shoot. Cunningham will help spread the floor, which benefits scorers like Grant and Bey.
So we’ve taken some of the ball-handling and heavy lifting off of Killian Hayes, plus spread the floor for Saddiq Bey.

                        Now it’s Jerami Grant‘s turn.
I don’t expect Cunningham to step right in and lead the Detroit Pistons in his rookie season, but his presence should aid the teams’ leader, taking some of the offensive pressure off of Grant.

Grant had been the team’s closer, and rightfully so after averaging career-highs in points, assists, and minutes per game. Grant averaged 22.3 points, 2.8 assists per game on 33.9 minutes of work per night. Grant also added 4.6 boards while converting on 43% of his shots from the field and 35% from three-point range. Grant also drilled 84.5% of his free throw attempts.
