  • This is why we assholes don't believe...

Once again the Lions get no help from Cleveland.

    We've seen this shit before.

This is what happened in 1980 (Billy Sims' first year). The Lions had split with the Vikings that year, but the Vikes had them beat by conference record tie breaker. The Lions needed to win in week 15 and 16 and needed the Vikes to Lose both games. We all thought that this was a possibility because the Vikings played a very good Cleveland in week 15 and then finished in Houston. Both Houston finished 11-5 that year.

Don't judge. We were young (and cute ;))

The Vikes got the ball on their own twenty with 17 seconds left in the game. They ran a hook and lateral (Yep. A fucking hook and lateral) on the first play and got the ball to Cleveland's 46 with 5 seconds left. Tommy Kramer heaved up a Hail Mary that Ahmad Rashad caught to win the NFC North and knock the Lions out of the playoffs.

The more shit changes, the more it stays the same.

      • I am infinitely more irritated by the Lions not taking care of their own business than another team not doing the Lions job for them.

You were watching the Lions beat Tampa and then found out what happened in Cleveland?

          Man that would have sucked.

Remember when we used to believe? And these fuckers wonder why we don't anymore. Ha!

The point is that this is who the Lions are.

They don't take care of their own business and if they do circumstance makes it so it doesn't matter.

In 1980, they were a very good 9-7 team. They beat some teams up and lost some heartbreakers. That was the year they lost in OT to the Bears on Thanksgiving when the Bears returned the kickoff for a TD.

With two weeks left they needed to win out, and did. They took care of business but it didn't matter because the Vikings had a horse shoe up their ass that year.

              • When I look back at it 1980 was the year.

It was the year that I "got it" and really quit giving a shit.

Thanksgiving 1980 was the last time the Lions pissed me off. I mean really pissed me off. The Tommy Kramer to Ahmad Rashad Hail Mary was just a "Well. What did we expect? It's the Lions" moment.

Since then I have pretty much watched with bemused indifference. Sure, I would love to see them do well, but I know they probably never will and it just doesn't matter.

We must be the same age. I put up with 1980 because 1979 was so painful with the 2-14 year.

4-0 and you can't win the division. 1981 was worse for me because of the late collapse with Lawrence Taylor running back the interception to win thanksgiving and losing the last week to Tampa bay after being 7-0 at home losing the playoff bid, etc........

                      • My moment was 1994. The Lions had beaten the Packers just the week before to win the division and host the Wild Card game, had the lead going into the final minute in said Wild Card game...

... then Jenkins let Sterling Sharpe blow right by him with 55 seconds left for the game ending TD. I mean, just untouched... wasn't even looking at the most dangerous receiver the Packers had.

I get worked up still, but I've never let myself get so emotionally crushed ever again.

Except every Fall Sunday since then!
The Lions went 11-5 in 2014

Oh, take your little "INNER PAIN" narrative somewhere else, little boy.

The grownups are talking. Shh shh shh.

yes .... bought seats way up in the nosebleeds. Watched that play on the scoreboard.

I was also in the stands watching Paul Edinger kick that ugly 55 yarder that ushered in the Millen era. It's been a dark stretch.

                              • I don't get how you guys spend so much time fretting about how another man "feels" or put so much effort into explaining how another man must "feel."

Seems kind of effeminate to me.
The only thing missing from that Marvin Jones touchdown reversal is that it wasn't a first round playoff game.
