Didn't know where to put this....but I wanted to share this story with the forum as both a cautionary tale and so you could all revel at my misery.
Setting the stage: About 25 years ago I had to have a root canal in one of my forward molars...I, apparently, have narrow roots so the procedure needed to be done by a specialist....so I had the work done in Mt. Pleasant....then about 12-15 years ago I had some sort of infection at the root canal site...I went to the dentist, he gave me antibiotics and told me that if I continued to have any issues I needed to come back. 2 days later I felt great and had no issues until......
Recently: In July I took a new position at work....but almost as soon as I took the job I lost all of my energy and was feeling foggy. September came and fall allergies with it....I was sick quite a bit and was having terrible problems with allergy snot draining down the back of my throat (gross...I know...but I'm getting there). also starting getting very bad eyeball headaches (left eye). So my wife (as wives do) starts getting on my case that I need to be healthier...I'd gained a couple of pounds (I really like food), am 45 now, and don't exercise quite as much as I should. So I started a diet lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks and was happy with where I was, though my overall energy was still not great. But after the diet.....my stomach continued to hurt and I found it hard to go back to eating normally, I lost another 15 lbs (haven't been this skinny since HS).
But I'm still plugging along.....telling myself that I'm just run down from the stress of transitioning to a new position at work.
The day after thanksgiving: One side of the upper part of my mouth starts with some major swelling...which normally means you're in a real bad mood, but my mouth didn't hurt. My cheek swelled up like an MMA fighter but it didn't hurt.
So I go into the dentist...figuring that I'm about to go get some antibiotics and be on my way. They do the X-rays and in comes the dentist...She explains to me that 12 years ago the antibiotics that I took.. killed the inflammation but didn't stop the infection. This infection has been living in my upper jaw and basically eating it's way through all the bone and tissue for the past decade.....even eating a fissure into my sinus (all of that hay fever was really infection draining down my throat). Se tells me the prognosis isn't great...but she wants me to go see a specialist for the surgical procedures I'm going to need.......which includes: losing my back 2 teeth (the wisdoms were already gone), removing infection, and repairing the sinus cavity (which she's not even sure if an endo can do...and I might need an ENT)
Naturally it takes a couple of weeks to get into the specialist....I get there and the endo says (the endo that took 2 weeks to get an appointment with)....."I'm very concerned about this infection....If my daughter didn't have a band concert tonight I'd stay late and do the surgery right now....can you come back tomorrow?" BALLS
On top of all the stuff I mentioned above I had to have my sinus cavity "lifted"......and at this point just say OK (because I'm not sure I want to know).
The only saving grace through this whole thing.....on the morning of the surgery I'm having some anxiety, I call up the doc to ask about my options and he prescribes me 2 pills of something called Halcion. My wife reports that was in surgery for 3 hrs...I remember maybe 2 minutes total, flashes here and there. I looked up this drug and one of the warning signs said it can be used as a date-rape drug.........which describes my experience exactly, because walking out of the surgery I knew I had been violated but just didn't remember most of the nasty parts (though...I do remember the dentist asking me to open my mouth and turn towards him, so maybe I was date-raped).
The moral of this story is.....just say no to root canals. I've now been told that when they do a root canal that it's almost impossible to get out the dead tissue, so this happens quite a bit. (best Adam Sandler voice: This is information I needed to know YESTERDAY)

Deb...For starters I'm feeling much better. This has been going on for years..I feel pounds lighter, when stuff creeps on you don't really realize how bad/tired you feel.....because it happens so slow you get used to it.
My prognosis is that I go back in 4 months to see if the bone grafting took...if not: more bone grafting. If it takes I can have an implant next November or so

That's good news, glad you are feeling better!!
I thought you were about to tell me you had the same condition my friend from high school has. She has had that allergy draining symptom for awhile, but when they investigated they found that her BRAIN FLUID was leaking! So she's had some ridiculous procedures where they try to find the leak and plug it...it sounds really horrible. Yours sounds equally as bad but at least it's not your damn brain fluid lol.#birdsarentreal

Yowsers! That is some nasty shit!
I was playing hockey as an 18 year old whippersnapper. It was a converted tennis court. It was becoming dusk, and our goalie skated off the ice with no warning. As a defensman I jumped into the goal and shouted to one of the other guys to find out what is up with the goalie. Just then I turned my focus to the game and wham! I am on my back not knowing what happened to me with both of my brothers asking me if I am OK. I took a puck in the mouth which fractured my jaw. One of my front teeth had to be secured with a gold post. 25 years later and I am coaching hockey, teaching positioning and movement on the power play face off and one of the kids fighting for the faceoff headbutts me in the mouth as I am dropping the puck.
Three years later I learn I have a sever infection with the post. Prognoses: If you want to keep your jaw, both front teeth have to go. I used a clapper for a while which worked fine but am really glad I chose implants. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Edit: Your plight sounds awful and screwing with the sinus is a fucked scenario.Last edited by Malto Marko; January 8, 2019, 01:13 PM.I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.
