Patriots sign former Lion Bobby Carpenter.
Patriots bring back LB Carpenter
By Field Yates | ESPNBoston.com
The Patriots on Wednesday re-signed veteran linebacker Bobby Carpenter and re-added tight end Alex Silvestro to the practice squad, the team announced.
Carpenter was first signed this offseason, spending training camp with the team before being released as it finalized its 53-man roster. He was named one of the team's 10 offseason award winners, and offers strong versatility to player a number of different linebacker spots. A former first-round pick of Cowboys in 2006, Carpenter has recorded 165 career tackles.
His signing could be an indication that linebacker Dont'a Hightower, who left in the second quarter of the team's Week 4 win over the Buffalo Bills with a hamstring injury, will miss practice time this week and potentially this Sunday's game with the Broncos. The team will release its first injury report of the week later Wednesday.
Silvestro was converted from defensive end to tight end this offseason, and like Carpenter, was with the team until the final roster cut downs. He was subsequently signed to the Patriots' practice squad, but his contract was later terminated. Originally an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers in 2011, Silvestro was signed to the Patriots' active roster the night before Super Bowl XLVI, although he did not play.
Additionally, the team announced that defensive tackle Terrell McClain was waived, and practice squad offensive lineman Thomas Austin had his contract terminated, as was previously reported.
Comcast SportsNet first reported that the team intended to bring back Carpenter at some point this week.

Former Lions QB and Michigan QB Drew Henson hired as a coach in Yankees Organization.
Report: Drew Henson hired as coach in Yankees organization
Posted by James Jahnke
Detroit Free Press Sports Writer
Former Michigan and Detroit Lions quarterback Drew Henson has been hired as a coach in the New York Yankees organization, according to the New York Post.
The Brighton native, 32, will be a coach with the Yankees' Rookie League team next season in Tampa.
“He is a bright guy with high integrity who has been through a lot," Yankees minor league head Mark Newman told the Post. “One thing that’s intriguing is that he has had a lot of life experiences to this point. For no other reason other than that, maybe he can help the young guys."
Henson was a two-sport star who left U-M after his junior football season to sign with the Yankees. But he only registered nine major league at-bats in his career, spending most of it in the minor leagues.
He also played briefly for the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings in the NFL. Henson reportedly also is involved with a financial-planning company at the moment.

IRVING, Texas ? Veteran linebacker Ernie Sims will visit with the Cowboys on Wednesday with the anticipation of signing with Sean Lee to miss the rest of the season with a severe case of turf toe.
UPDATE (10:05 a.m.): The Cowboys are signing Sims and moving Lee to IR.
Sims, 27, played in 13 games last year for Indianapolis with four starts and was credited with 32 tackles. In 2010 he started 15 games for Philadelphia and had 55 tackles and two sacks. He spent his first four seasons with Detroit.
Lee will have season-ending surgery on his right big toe after suffering the injury in the third quarter of Sunday?s win at Carolina. Lee had a second MRI on Tuesday which revealed the ligament damage.
Lee leads the Cowboys in tackles with 77 in the first six games, according to the coaches? film. He has two tackles for loss, eight quarterback pressures, one interception, two pass deflections and a forced fumble.
Dan Connor will replace Lee in the starting lineup, and Bruce Carter will take over as the defensive signal caller.
The Cowboys feel the need for a more experienced linebacker with Orie Lemon as the only true backup inside linebacker on the 53-man roster. Outside linebacker Alex Albright has worked in practice and preseason games at inside linebacker.
