Bills sign Sam Martin, place Marquez Stevenson on IR

The Bills have a new punter.

Veteran Sam Martin signed with the Bills on Wednesday, the team announced. Buffalo placed receiver Marquez Stevenson on injured reserve in a corresponding move.

Martin will replace rookie Matt Araiza, who the Bills waived four days ago in the wake of a gang-rape lawsuit.

The Bills worked out four punters Sunday and then had Martin in for a visit Wednesday after the Broncos released him.

The Lions made Martin a fifth-round draft choice in 2013, and he spent seven years in Detroit. He was in Denver the past two years.

In 2021, Martin ranked third in the NFL in net punting average at 42.8 yards per punt. He tied for fifth in the league with 28 punts inside the 20-yard line. During the preseason, Martin had a 49-yard net average on four preseason punts, with one inside the 20.

Seahawks place L.J. Collier on injured reserve, re-sign Justin Coleman

The Seahawks released veteran cornerback Justin Coleman on Tuesday, but it was a procedural move. The team re-signed him to its 53-player roster Thursday, according to the NFL’s personnel notice.

Coleman, who signed a one-year deal with the Seahawks in March, previously played with Seattle in 2015 and 2017-18. He was with the Dolphins last year.

The Seahawks cut Coleman temporarily to get edge rusher L.J. Collier on the initial 53-player roster before moving him to injured reserve. They did that Thursday, giving Collier a chance to return after missing a minimum of four games.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Collier has “still got issues with his elbow.”

“It’s not back yet,” Carroll said, via Michael-Shawn Dugar of TheAthletic.com.

Collier, who didn’t play in any of the team’s preseason games and practiced only 10 days in camp, appeared to be on the roster bubble heading into this week. The Seahawks, though, aren’t ready to give up on the former first-round pick.

The 29th overall choice in 2019 has played 37 games with 16 starts and has totaled 33 tackles, three sacks and 12 quarterback hits.

Collier is scheduled to make $986,324 in salary in 2022.

The Seahawks also made official the signings of defensive back Xavier Crawford, quarterback Sean Mannion and offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie to their practice squad. They waived defensive end Joshua Onujiogu.

Vikings adding David Blough to practice squad

Quarterback David Blough is leaving Detroit but not the NFC North.

Blough plans to sign with the Vikings’ practice squad, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

The 27-year-old Blough has spent the last three years with Detroit and made their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday. But the Lions cut him yesterday and signed Nate Sudfeld to be the backup quarterback behind Jared Goff.

That resulted in Blough going on waivers, and when he wasn’t claimed, he decided to make Minnesota his next stop.

Giants’ Kenny Golladay healthy now, but had a “procedure” in spring

Giants wide receiver Kenny Golladay has not been the impact player the team was hoping he’d be when he signed a four-year, $72 million contract last offseason. His health may have been a part of that.

Today Giants General Manager Joe Schoen revealed that Golladay had a “procedure” in the spring, but would not reveal the nature of that procedure.

“He’s good. He’s come to work every day,” Schoen said, via ESPN. “Great kid, works hard, knows his assignments. I don’t think he’s missed a practice. He’s been available, other than the spring, he had a little procedure. But he’s been good.”

Golladay said today that he feels good and thinks he can be more productive this season.

“First off, I just want to remain healthy,” Golladay said. “Very blessed that I was able to go through this whole training camp healthy, be able to actually be a part of each practice to get that chemistry down. . . . I feel a lot better coming into this.”

The Giants would feel a lot better if Golladay could look more like the player who had two 1,000-yard seasons in Detroit than the player who managed just 521 yards in 14 games last year for the Giants.

Browns add tight end Jesse James

It’s apparently sign-a-former-Steeler day in Cleveland. On the same day the Browns agreed to terms with veteran offensive tackle Joe Haeg, who played for the Steelers in 2021, the Browns added veteran tight end Jesse James, per multiple reports.

A fifth-round pick of the Steelers in 2015, James spent four years in Pittsburgh and two in Detroit. Last year, he played for the Bears.

James has 157 career receptions for 1,522 yards and 12 touchdowns. He has appeared in 102 regular-season games, with 63 starts.

The Browns parted ways with Austin Hooper in the offseason, after signing David Njoku to a significant contract. The No. tight end on the roster currently is Miller Forristall.

Cut by Broncos and signed by Bills, Sam Martin knows punters have to stay ready

Veteran punter Sam Martin saw his career impacted during the preseason by a domino effect that started with the Bills cutting Matt Haack and giving their starting job to Matt Araiza, then saw Araiza cut when it was revealed that he was accused of rape last year, then had the Bills needing a punter because Haack was no longer available when he signed with the Colts after Rigoberto Sanchez suffered a torn Achilles.

None of that would have affected Martin, except that he declined to take a pay cut, which led the Broncos to go with the younger and cheaper Corliss Waitman. That left Martin needing a job, and the Bills were the team with an opening.

The 32-year-old Martin said he knows punters always need to be ready for change.

“Just stay ready. You never know what’s going to happen,” Martin said, via the Buffalo News. “Getting here in Week 1 is something I’ve never experienced or been a part of. I’m just kind of learning as we go. It’s a short week for us to get together, but it’s been good so far. Everyone has been awesome. You just kind of got to roll with the punches and do what you can to make the best of it.”

One major change for Martin is that he’ll be punting in windy Buffalo, often an unforgiving environment for a punter. Martin’s nine-year career so far has consisted of seven seasons in a dome in Detroit, and two seasons at the altitude of Denver, which boosts punters’ stats. Now Martin says he’s ready for the challenges of the elements.

“Obviously, it’s something you think about when you come here, especially as a punter,” he said. “It’s one of those things – it is a challenge. You’ve just got to accept it and treat it as an opportunity. Anything like that, it’s perception. It’s not easy, it’s not going to be easy, but I look at it as a challenge. I’m up for it. I’m excited about it. If you can punt in Buffalo, really you can punt anywhere. Rather than being concerned about it, you’ve got to almost get excited about it and get excited about conquering it.”

The Araiza fiasco left the Bills with egg on their faces, but they’re hoping that Martin can play well and give them stability at a position that became a distraction this preseason.

Free agent linebacker Jamie Collins visited the Raiders on Wednesday.

He has familiarity with Josh McDaniels, Dave Ziegler and Patrick Graham from their days together in New England.

Collins spent parts of six seasons with the Patriots, playing 76 games with 58 starts and totaling 328 tackles, 18.5 sacks and nine interceptions. He was in New England from 2013-15 and part of 2016 as well as 2019 and part of last season.

In 2021, he played two games for the Lions and 10 for the Patriots.

Collins, 32, has 706 career tackles, 26.5 sacks, 12 interceptions and 19 forced fumbles since the Patriots drafted him in the second round in 2013.

49ers place Elijah Mitchell on IR, visit with free agent backs

49ers running back Elijah Mitchell is set to miss a couple of months with a sprained MCL and the 49ers are looking at options to help carry the load in their backfield during his absence.

Mitchell was officially placed on injured reserve on Tuesday and Field Yates of ESPN reports that seven free agent running backs were at the team’s facility as they considered additions to the roster. Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman, Nate McCrary, Abram Smith, La’Mical Perine, and Godwin Igwebuike all worked out for the team while Marlon Mack was in for a visit.

Coleman is a familiar face to the 49ers as he spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the team. He signed with the Jets in 2021 and was one of their final cuts this summer.

Perine was also with the Jets in 2021 while Freeman and McCrary were with the Ravens. Mack played for the Colts before spending this offseason with the Texans and Igweguike was with the Lions until cutdown day in August. Smith was undrafted this year and was cut by the Saints last month.

The 49ers also signed safety Tashaun Gipson to their active roster from the practice squad.

Panthers place Andre Roberts on injured reserve

The Panthers will need to find a new kick returner.

The team announced that wide receiver Andre Roberts has been placed on injured reserve. A knee injury is the reason for Roberts’ trip to the list and he will have to miss at least four games before he’ll become eligible to return.

Roberts returned two kickoffs for 35 yards and one punt for 10 yards during the season-opening loss to the Browns. He did not play on any offensive snaps.

The three time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro signed with the Panthers this offseason.

Shi Smith is likely to take over punt return duties while Chuba Hubbard and Laviska Shenault are options for kickoff duty.

Titans place Da’Shawn Hand, A.J. Moore on injured reserve

The Titans have made a pair of roster moves with players who sustained season-ending injuries.

Tennessee announced the club has placed defensive end Da'Shawn Hand and defensive back A.J. Moore on injured reserve.

Hand suffered a torn quad and Moore suffered an ankle injury during the Week One loss to the Giants.

Hand was on Tennessee’s practice squad last year before signing a futures deal with the team and sticking on the 53-man roster after training camp. He played just two defensive snaps on Sunday.

Moore was on the field for five special teams snaps. He joined the Titans in March.

Tennessee also announced the club has signed defensive back Nate Brooks to its practice squad.

Rams Sign G Oday Aboushi

After losing another interior offensive line starter in their opener, the Rams brought in a veteran reinforcement. Well-traveled veteran Oday Aboushi agreed to terms with the Rams on a practice squad deal Wednesday.



This move comes a day after Aboushi was in Las Vegas for a Raiders workout. Aboushi spent last season with the Chargers, starting five games before an ACL tear ended his first Bolts season early. For the time being, the 10th-year veteran will stay in Los Angeles.

The Rams are set to be without Brian Allen for a bit; the recently re-signed center suffered a knee injury that required surgery. That news came weeks after third-round rookie Logan Bruss, the Rams’ top 2022 draftee, went down with ACL and MCL tears. The defending Super Bowl champions are expected to move Coleman Shelton from guard to center and start Tremayne Anchrum at right guard. Shelton won the right guard gig in training camp. Anchrum, a 2020 seventh-round pick, competed with Shelton and Bruss for that spot in August but has never started an NFL game.

Aboushi, 31, brings 47 games’ worth of starter experience. Used as both a backup and a starter during his nomadic career, Aboushi is one of a handful of players to have been a starter for six teams. The former Jets draftee has spent time as a first-stringer for the Jets, Texans, Seahawks, Cardinals, Lions and Chargers.

He signed a one-year, $1.6MM deal with the Chargers last year and was a Week 1 right guard starter. The Chargers moved on following Aboushi’s knee injury, drafting Zion Johnson in Round 1. Considering the Rams’ interior O-line inexperience at the moment, it would not surprise if the Virginia alum added a seventh team to that list.

Additionally, the Rams promoted offensive lineman Jeremiah Kolone from their practice squad. Kolone, 27, was with the team during training camp but has yet to play in an NFL game.
