Barry Sanders: New regime has a “great opportunity” in Detroit
Posted by Myles Simmons on June 30, 2021, 9:00 AM EDT

The Lions have infamously been mired in mediocrity for much of the past 30 years, with their last playoff victory coming in 1991.
But according to one of the franchise legends, the new regime of General Manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell can awaken the proverbial sleeping giant.
At a celebrity golf tournament in Detroit, Hall of Famer Barry Sanders noted how much Detroit loves football.
“Well, it’s a great opportunity for the new regime,” Sanders said, via Eric Woodyard of ESPN. “So many great sports moments have happened here in Detroit. There’s been hockey championships, baseball championships, basketball championships, but Detroit is definitely a football town — absolutely. There’s a thirst and a hunger to win. And hopefully, they’re the guys who can get it done. I know the town is excited. And we know that the work is cut out for them, but if it was easy, everyone would be able to do it. So, hopefully they’re the guys.”
Sanders was involved in the search process that brought Campbell to Detroit in January.
The Lions haven’t won a division title since 1993, though they did make the playoffs in two of Jim Caldwell’s four years as head coach from 2014-2017. But after three consecutive last-place finishes since 2018, Holmes and Campbell definitely have plenty of work ahead to turn Detroit into a consistent contender.
Trickalicious - I don't think it is fair that the division rivals get to play the Lions twice. The Lions NEVER get to play the Lions, let alone twice.

Yes, Reggie Bush should get his Heisman Trophy back
Posted by Mike Florio on July 1, 2021, 8:56 PM EDT

When Reggie Bush had his Heisman Trophy taken away for receiving benefits while playing college football from agents who wanted to eventually represent him, the trophy never was re-awarded. That should make it easy to give it back to him.
Now that the floodgates for getting paid by would-be agents have finally flown open, Bush should definitely get his Heisman Trophy back.
Bush said last November that it should be returned. We agreed then, and agree even more strongly now.
In a statement issued Thursday, Bush said that he and his team have reached out on multiple occasions to the Heisman Trust regarding the return of the Heisman Trophy, and that the NCAA also has been contacted about the reinstatement of his college records.
His efforts have gone nowhere. Bush said he was ignored by the NCAA, and that the Heisman Trust said that “they could not help us.”
“It is my strong belief that I won the Heisman Trophy ‘solely’ due to my hard work and dedication on the football field and it is also my firm belief that my records should be reinstated,” Bush said.
He’s absolutely right. The action taken against Bush flowed directly from the phony notion of amateurism that has justified, for decades, not sharing billions in revenues with players. That wall has now imploded, at least as it relates to money made separate and apart from the relationship with the university.
So do the right thing, NCAA. It will help atone (albeit slightly) for all those years of doing the wrong thing.

I'm sure a bunch of teams in baseball steal signs. Do you think that if they legalize it moving forward, the Houston Astros should be looked at fondly as non cheaters?
I'm sure a lot of MMA fighters are on special illegal sauce of some kind. Do you think if they legalize certain drugs moving forward, that TJ Dillashaw should be rewarded for doing it when it was illegal?
We know a lot of NFL players have smoked pot and still passed tests etc. Do you think if the NFL legalized it at some point that Josh Gordon should have some kind of salary compensation rewarded for all the time he missed when other guys were doing it and didn't get caught?
Reggie pretty knowingly broke the rules and got caught, didn't he?WHO CARES why it says paper jam when there is no paper jam?

Got no problem with the runner at 2B educating the rest of his team about what he saw in the dugout between innings.
Got major league problems when a guy in CF is relaying signs to the team.
Thorpe's problem was fundamental. He was considered a Professional - as he was playing Semi-Pro ball before the Olympics.
Nobody questions that Thorpe might have been the greatest athlete of all time - they question why you bend rules for him.
Added: Like people give two fucks about that - they recognize that fact regardless of whether he gets his Gold Medal or not.Last edited by Fraquar; July 2, 2021, 09:28 PM.

The is nothing different about Jim Thorpe - unless you are looking for political correctness (a sadly bad symptom of this society).
By the rules of his time - he was an INELLIGIBLE participant.
You can't fast forward 80 years later and say he was - the rules are there in fine print.
What participants/players do within the rules that stand at the time they participate is all that matters.
Added: What boggles the mind is that people would pursue reinstating his Gold Medal - but not under the grounds he was an eligible participant (he wasn't), but on the grounds that the protest wasn't filed in time - in 1912 - where information might take MONTHS to travel.Last edited by Fraquar; July 2, 2021, 09:42 PM.

I just don't think it's necessary to give Reggie the status back ... or any type of obvious decision. When the rule is in place and you get caught breaking it, you don't get your penalty forgiven just because they changed the rule in the future.

It's why I used the Thorpe example.
The status of the player shouldn't change the rules of the time - that ALL had to live by at that time.
I'll add this. There are only 3 things that I can see that would preclude a player from an achievement:
1) You violated a rule from participation (i.e. Danny Almonte). Everything you do at that point is null and void - and everything your team does is null and void. I guess Bush falls under this category - once he or his relatives received a payment he was no longer eligible to participate.
2) You cheated - i.e. you circumvented the rules of the game to achieve a goal.
3) You took things that enhanced your performance.
It's not really until you enter the steroid era where you see #3 come to light - where one drug performs multiple roles (i.e. muscle recovery and muscle mass).Last edited by Fraquar; July 2, 2021, 10:42 PM.

Darius Slay to Steven Nelson: Eagles green would look good on you
Posted by Josh Alper on July 7, 2021, 7:13 AM EDT

Cornerback Steven Nelson has not found a new team since being released by the Steelers in March, but one NFC East corner would like to see Nelson become his teammate this season.
Eagles corner Darius Slay posted a message on Twitter Tuesday that was directed at Nelson and said “that green will look good on ya” in reference to Philly’s uniform color. Nelson replied that “it could all be so simple my man.”
The suggestion from that reply is that Nelson would be up for joining forces with Slay as long as the Eagles hit the right price. There have been reports this offseason that the Eagles are interested in Nelson, but that they have different views on the right compensation.
Slay is the clear No. 1 corner for the Eagles and there’s little else settled in a group that also includes Kevon Seymour, Avonte Maddox, Craig James, fourth-round pick Zech McPhearson, and others.
