A co-workers doctor explained that the reason we are seeing so many Achilles injuries lately is that players are "locking out" other joints (braces, heavy tape jobs) - and that the force has to go somewhere. Seems like common sense to me.

It seems like in general the NFL has always had a lot of Achilles injury: high energy movement/low energy rest.
Just a brutal sport.
Maybe braces/tape jobs do contribute, but the additional risk must not outweigh their benefit in mitigating other far more common (but obviously less traumatic) injuries.
