  • Adding onto the NE Patriots + play-caller Matt Patricia story. Hilarious.

The Athletic's Chad Graff writes "the point of concern is nearing" for the Patriots offense after it has struggled badly throughout training camp.

"The running game struggled," Graff writes. "The receivers didn’t get open. The incompletions mounted." And the quarterbacks have been under constant pressure. With longtime OC Josh McDaniels gone, coach Bill Belichick has handed offensive coaching duties to ex-DC Matt Patricia and former special teams coach Joe Judge. Patricia is coaching the offensive line and calling the plays while Judge is handling Mac Jones and the quarterbacks. Just an utter nightmare. It's a big concern for Jones' development. This offense is completely devoid of playmakers, and the coaching sounds even worse.

Bill Belichick on offensive play caller: “We’re going through a process”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has a new pull-string saying, to go along with “on to Cincinnati,” “day-to-day,” and “it’s already been addressed,” and others that aren’t currently coming to mind.

          We’re going through a process.

He used that one three times when explaining the fact that two different assistant coaches called offensive plays during Thursday night’s preseason opener, against the Giants.

We’ll defer to the questions and answers on the subject, as distributed by the team after the game.

Q: We saw both Matt Patricia and Joe Judge taking turns on play call duty tonight on the offense. Is that the plan moving forward, having them switch back and forth, and do you plan on naming a single guy or going with both?

BB: Yeah, well, we did this game. We did a lot of things in this game that are going to be beneficial in the long run, whether it was on the coaching staff, playing time, players that played and so forth. That’s all part of the process.

Q: Bill, what were some of the benefits of having Joe and Matt call plays tonight?

BB: I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to do that.

Q: Do you know if one will call plays when the regular season arrives?

BB: Yeah, don’t worry about that. We’ll work it out.

          Q: Have you decided?

BB: We’re going through a process. Just like everything else on this team. . . .

Q: You mentioned earlier with the offensive play caller you’re going through a process. What do you need to see —

BB: I don’t need to see anything, just we’re going through a process. Simple as that.

Q: It’s just a little bit of an unusual situation for us that have watched you guys before —

BB: What do you want me to do?

Q: I guess we’re just looking for a little clarity as to why we’re seeing what we’re seeing.

BB: Great. Yeah. Going through a process.

The most logical conclusion is that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach wanted to give each one of them a try at calling plays, so that he can analyze their performance — the same way he’d watch film of a player. That would seem to be part of the process.

With Belichick, however, nothing can be ruled out. Maybe the process results in both guys calling plays during the regular season, or perhaps alternating during a given game.

Regardless, an unexpected mystery continues in New England. In 30 days, we’ll see whether it’s Patricia or Judge or both or someone else calling offensive plays in the regular-season opener against the Dolphins.

          • Brian Daboll: I think Kenny Golladay has acclimated himself well

Posted by Josh Alper on August 15, 2022, 8:42 AM EDT

            USA Today Sports

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay‘s first season with the Giants was a major disappointment as he caught 37 passes while being targeted 76 times and did not score a touchdown in 14 appearances last year.

Signing Golladay to a four-year, $72 million contract was one of many moves that led the Giants to fire General Manager Dave Gettleman earlier this year and his poor showing also contributed to head coach Joe Judge getting the axe. Brian Daboll is now running the team, but Golladay didn’t look much different in the preseason opener. Three passes came his way and he caught one for six yards, but had a pass near the end zone go off his hands and failed to create separation on a deep ball that also went incomplete.

Daboll said Daniel Jones‘ pass was low on the play near the end zone, but it was still reminiscent of last season and fits with reports from practice that say Golladay doesn’t appear to have regained any of the spark he was missing in 2021. At a Sunday press conference, Daboll was asked if he’s been pleased with what he’s seen from the wideout thus far.

“I think he’s acclimated himself well in terms of what we’re doing,” Daboll said. “Again, all receivers, they’re different. Some are really shifty and quick. Some are big and physical. It’s just a matter of when you have an opportunity to go out there and make plays, which he’s made some of them, that you go ahead and make them. I’ve been pleased with how he’s handled himself. He’s been a pro, and he’s competing everyday with those guys.”

The Giants didn’t have Kadarius Toney on Thursday because of a hamstring injury and his lack of availability is another unwelcome callback to last year’s offensive struggles. Changes in both narratives would be steps in the right direction for the Giants.

            • Jaguars slash six from roster, including Marvin Hall

The Jaguars made their second round of cuts on Tuesday.

The team waived five players and released veteran wide receiver Marvin Hall. Offensive lineman Beau Benzschawel, cornerback Shabari Davis, tight end Grayson Gunter, linebacker Wyatt Ray, and wide receiver Lujuan Winningham are hitting the waiver wire.

Hall signed with the Jaguars in May after trying out during their rookie minicamp. He has 38 catches for 782 yards and five touchdowns in 47 games with the Falcons, Lions, and Browns. He had two catches in the Hall of Fame game, but didn’t make any catches in the second preseason outing and didn’t play at all in Jacksonville’s most recent game.

The moves bring the Jaguars under the 80-man roster limit well ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

                  • Falcons release Auden Tate, Geronimo Allison

The Falcons have reduced their roster to 80 players, letting go of a pair of veteran receivers in the process.

Atlanta announced that receiver Auden Tate, receiver Geronimo Allison, defensive back Lafayette Pitts, outside linebacker Kuony Deng, and defensive lineman Jalen Dalton have all been cut.

Dalton was waived with an injury designation.

Tate signed with the Falcons in March after four seasons with the Bengals. But he did not make any starts and played just seven games last season, finishing the year on injured reserve.

After opting out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Allison spent time on the Lions’ practice squad last year. He appeared in three games and only received a pair of targets. He spent the first four years of his career with the Packers.

All teams will have to reduce their rosters to 53 players next week.

                      • New England Patriots fans already fed up with Matt Patricia

The New England Patriots just wrapped up their preseason with a 23-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, and all is not well in Boston. After watching last year’s offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels take the head coaching job for the Raiders, the Patriots offense has been floundering all offseason, and all eyes are on McDaniels’ replacement(s): former Lions head coach Matt Patricia and former Giants head coach Joe Judge.

The Patriots never named a true offensive coordinator replacement for McDaniels, but both Patricia (officially offensive line coach/senior football advisor) and Judge (offensive assistant/quarterbacks) have taken on most of his responsibilities, with some reporters in New England speculating that Patricia is the true man behind the offense right now.

It’s only the preseason, but the results have been a disaster thus far. Reports out of camp have been that the Patriots' offense has looked awful, confused, and lost.

The Texans’ initial roster includes only two quarterbacks. Third quarterback Jeff Driskel is among their cuts Tuesday.

The team could bring back Driskel on its practice squad with Davis Mills and Kyle Allen as the top two quarterbacks on the roster.

Driskel, 29, appeared in one game for Houston last season but did not throw a pass. He has spent time with the 49ers, Bengals, Lions, Broncos and Texans. In 16 games, including nine starts, in his career, Driskel has thrown 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
