  • Report: Quandre Diggs is expected to be fully cleared in June

Posted by Myles Simmons on March 3, 2022, 9:33 AM EST

Safety Quandre Diggs suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula in the Seahawks’ Week 18 victory over the Cardinals. But as a pending free agent, he should be fine by the time training camp rolls around in the summer.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Diggs is expected to be fully medically cleared from his injuries in June.

Seattle acquired Diggs midway through the 2019 season from Detroit and he started 38 games for the franchise. Diggs was a Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and 2021, recording five interceptions in each of the last two seasons. He’s caught 13 picks with Seattle over the last three seasons.

The Lions drafted Diggs in the sixth round of the 2015 draft. In 65 games with the franchise and 40 starts, Diggs recorded six interceptions and 24 passes defensed.

    • Patriots releasing Kyle Van Noy

The Patriots have made a move in preparation for the new league year.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, New England is releasing veteran linebacker Kyle Van Noy. The move will create just under $5 million in cap space, which doubles the Patriots’ available funds.

Van Noy was an important piece of New England’s defense in 2021, returning to the club after a year with Miami. He appeared in 16 games for the Patriots, starting eight of them. And he played 81 percent of the team’s defensive snaps, recording 66 total tackles, 5.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception, and 10 passes defensed.

Van Noy previously spent four seasons with the Patriots, coming over in 2016 via trade. He signed a four-year deal with Miami in 2020 but was released last March, just a year into that deal. He then re-signed with the Patriots on a two-year contract worth up to $13.2 million.

As a released veteran, Van Noy is immediately able to sign a new contract with a team — getting a head start on the unrestricted free agents that will become available later this month. Van Noy also would not count in the compensatory pick formula.

      • Quandre Diggs: Seahawks aren’t in rebuild mode

The Seahawks traded Russell Wilson and released Bobby Wagner, signaling a new era for the franchise. Despite that, safety Quandre Diggs said he received an assurance from coach Pete Carroll that the Seahawks aren’t rebuilding.

That was the final thing Diggs needed to hear before deciding to stay in Seattle on a three-year, $40 million deal.

It’s always tough to see a guy like Russ go, to see Russ and Bobby go, and it’s just like, ‘Sheez, what mode are we in?'” Diggs said, via Curtis Crabtree of Fox 13. “Being able to talk to Pete, being able to understand that we’re not in a rebuild mode, we’re tried to get this thing back rolling and build a team differently a little bit.”

Diggs expressed optimism at the Seahawks’ future and faith in his recovery from a broken leg. He is ready for whatever 2022 brings. (Spoiler alert: It might prove the Seahawks are in rebuild mode.)

“I had to make a decision based on myself and myself and my family. Me, myself, my agent, we thought this was the best decision for us,” Diggs said.

        • Justin Coleman agrees to one-year deal with Seahawks

Cornerback Justin Coleman played two seasons for the Seahawks earlier in his career and he’s set to make it three in 2022.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that Coleman has agreed to a one-year deal to return to Seattle. No other terms were reported.

Coleman played every game for the Seahawks during the 2017 and 2018 seasons before moving on for two years with the Lions and a year in Miami. He had 27 tackles and two interceptions in 16 games with the Dolphins.

Coleman returned two interceptions and one fumble for touchdowns during his first tour with the Seahawks and the team would not mind seeing that kind of production in his second stint.

          • Bill Belichick: Matt Patricia will have role on offensive coaching staff

Posted by Josh Alper on March 28, 2022, 12:55 PM EDT

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick isn’t naming an offensive coordinator for the 2022 season, but one of the team’s former defensive coordinators will be part of the plan to work with the offense in the wake of Josh McDaniels’ departure.

Matt Patricia’s work during his previous stint with the Patriots came on the defensive side of the ball, but head coach Bill Belichick included him in the list of offensive coaches with wide receivers coach Troy Brown, tight ends coach Nick Caley, and offensive assistant Joe Judge when saying he didn’t anticipate adding any more coaches to that side of the ball.

“Great to have Joe Judge back and Matt of course,” Belichick said, via Tom Curran of NBCSportsBoston.com. “They’re two really good coaches, along with some of the other coaches that we have offensively: Nick Caley, Troy and so forth, guys who were here last year. So, we’re working through it the best we can here. . . . I think Matt and Joe are pretty good coaches. Josh is a great coach, but we’ve gone through that multiple years.”

While Belichick was avoiding titles on Monday, he said everyone will have “a defined role” once the team begins doing on-field work later this offseason.

I'm just pleased as Punch that Patricia and Quinn aren't running the Detroit Lions anymore.

What a dumpster fire that was.

Cardinals claim Jessie Lemonier off waivers

The Cardinals added a linebacker to their roster on Tuesday.

Agent David Canter announced that his client Jessie Lemonier was claimed off of waivers by the NFC West club. Lemonier was waived by the Lions on Monday in a roster tweak after their rookie minicamp came to an end.

The Cardinals confirmed the move a short time later and announced that they have also released defensive lineman LaRon Stokes.

Lemonier signed with the Chargers after going undrafted out of Liberty in 2020 and appeared in six games as a rookie. He signed to the Lions practice squad in September and got promoted to the active roster in October.

Lemonier appeared in seven games and made two starts in 2021. He had 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks in those contests.

                  • Despite $5.9 million pay cut, Graham Glasgow says staying in Denver was his best option

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 21, 2022, 12:47 PM EDT

Broncos offensive lineman Graham Glasgow suffered a broken leg and torn ligaments last season, and to add insult to injury, he took a $5.9 million pay cut this year. But he says he’s OK with it all.

Glasgow said he still thinks Denver is the best place for him, and the reality is that his 2022 salary wasn’t guaranteed, and given his injury he wasn’t going to make a lot of money elsewhere if he had refused to take a pay cut and the Broncos had released him.

“It just really came down to, I love the area, my wife loves it here, I like playing here and I feel like it was the best option I had coming off the injury I had,” he said, via the Denver Post. “It’s just the reality of the situation.”

Glasgow wasn’t ready to go during the Broncos’ first minicamp, but he said he expects to be cleared for training camp, making a full recovery from a serious — and expensive — injury.

                    • JOE JUDGECS, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard reports there's a "high-level of concern" about what's going on with the Patriots' offense.

Patriots players have been "alarmed" with what they've seen from the team's offensive coaching staff and lack of direction on offense, according to Bedard. The Patriots haven't named an offensive coordinator since Josh McDaniels' departure, with the expectation Joe Judge or ex-Lions HC Matt Patricia will be the offensive play caller. Neither coach is known for offense. Judge's background is in special teams while Patricia's is in defense. Judge, a former college quarterback that spent 2019 as the Patriots' WR coach, is the likely favorite for the role. Judge said at the team's minicamp he plans to work closely with second-year QB Mac Jones.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was present for the first day of organized team activities. But Stafford did not throw Monday.

Stafford confirmed that he received an anti-inflammatory shot in his right elbow for an issue he dealt with last season. He also briefly wore a brace to limit his range of motion while healing, Jordan Rodrigue of TheAthletic.com reported last month.

Stafford said he doesn’t know yet whether he will throw in any of the OTAs or the minicamp or wait until training camp begins in July.

“Still working on it,” Stafford said, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.

Rams coach Sean McVay seems unconcerned, and it seems likely if there was any concern, the team would have signed a fourth quarterback by now. Stafford, John Wolford and Bryce Perkins are the only quarterbacks on the roster.

That means Wolford and Perkins will get a lot of work this spring as Stafford continues to rest his arm.

Former Lions WR Golden Tate signs with professional baseball team

The former Detroit Lions Pro Bowl receiver is trying his hand at a different sport.

Former NFL wide receiver Golden Tate has not yet officially retired from the game of football, but now he’s trying his hand at a different sport. After going basically an entire year without signing with an NFL team (he had a month-long stint with the Titans, but did not see the field), Tate has signed with the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League.

“I am extremely thankful to the West Coast League and the Port Angeles Lefties for allowing me to join their league,” Tate said in an official statement. “As some might know, I was drafted twice in baseball. As a child, my first love was baseball, so I’m excited about the opportunity to compete against some of the best young players in the league. I look forward to having a lot of fun and exploring baseball more.”

Tate was, indeed, drafted twice for Major League Baseball, first in the 2007 amateur draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 42nd round. Tate did not sign with the team and, instead, chose to play both baseball and football for the Notre Dame Irish. Three years later, he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 50th round. Again, he chose not to sign, since had had been just drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round.

Of course, Lions fans will remember Tate from his four-and-and-half-year span with the Detroit Lions. During that era, Tate caught 90 passes in four straight season, including a 2014 year in which he pulled in a career-high 1,331 yards on the way to his one and only Pro Bowl.

After the Lions traded Tate away at the trade deadline in 2018, he never saw the same level of success with the Eagles or Giants.

Tate is expected to start in the Lefties’ game on Tuesday night. We wish him nothing but the best of luck in his second professional sport!
