  • Former Lions head coach Jim Schwartz set to interview for defensive coordinator job

Another former Lions head coach has surfaced in the mix for a new job, with Jim Schwartz expected to interview for a defensive coordinator opening.

After Jim Caldwell surfaced as a candidate for a couple head coaching openings in this hiring cycle, another former Lions head coach has surfaced on the job market. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to interview Jim Schwartz for their vacant defensive coordinator job.

Schwartz spent the 2021 season as a senior defensive assistant back with the Tennessee Titans, where he was on Jeff Fisher’s coaching staff from 1999-2008 and the defensive coordinator from 2001-2008.

Schwartz was then hired as the Lions head coach in 2009. He had a 29-51 record and one playoff appearance over five seasons in Detroit, and he has not been a head coach since.

Another former Lions head coach has surfaced in this coaching cycle, as Jim Schwartz is expected to interview for a defensive coordinator post.

This has no basis on anything, but, he is the oldest looking young guy I've ever seen. When he was about to be drafted I thought they should be asking for his DL. That dude has probably never been carded.

        A good player though.

        • Steelers will promote Teryl Austin to defensive coordinator

Posted by Josh Alper on February 6, 2022, 2:41 PM EST

          USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers considered some options from outside the organization for their defensive coordinator vacancy, but they opted to promote someone already inside the organization.

According to multiple reports, the Steelers will name Teryl Austin as their new coordinator. Keith Butler announced his retirement after the team’s playoff loss to the Chiefs last month.

Austin has been a senior defensive assistant and the defensive backs coach in Pittsburgh for the last three seasons. He drew interest from the Giants to be their defensive coordinator, but will remain on Mike Tomlin’s staff rather than go to work for Brian Daboll.

Austin spent the 2018 season as the Bengals defensive coordinator and spent four seasons running the defense in Detroit.

                • Former NFL player Greg Robinson arrested on drug charges in Thibodaux

                  Dan Copp, The Courier
                  Wed, February 9, 2022, 8:52 AM·2 min read

A former NFL player and Thibodaux High School standout was arrested after police said they found large amounts of drugs in his possession during a car stop Monday evening.

Greg Robinson, 29, has been charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, crack cocaine, hydrocodone, marijuana, Xanax and methamphetamine, Thibodaux Police said.

The traffic stop occurred midnight in the 100 block of East Bayou Road. Authorities pulled over a 2021 Black Cadillac Escalade for a traffic violation which led to a search, police said.

After finding quantities of cocaine, crack cocaine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, Xanax and marijuana inside Robinson’s car, police obtained a search warrant for his other properties in Thibodaux, authorities said.

A search of those properties turned up about $120,810 worth of drugs, including over 3 pounds of crystal meth, 2.2 pounds of cocaine, nearly 40 pounds of marijuana, 4 grams of crack cocaine, 227 doses of hydrocodone, 48 doses of oxycodone and 18 doses of alprazolam, which is a generic form of Xanax.

Police said they also seized a large assortment of drug paraphernalia, firearm magazines and ammunition and a small amount of cash.

Robinson had stints in the NFL as a defensive tackle. After playing college football at Auburn University, he was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2014 before signing with the Detroit Lions in 2017. He was then signed to the Cleveland Browns in 2018 before becoming a free agent.

He was a two-time all-state player and one of the most sought-after prep offensive linemen in the country when he graduated from Thibodaux High School in 2011.

Robinson was arrested on drug charges in Texas in 2020 after federal agents said they found 157 pounds of marijuana in a rented vehicle in which he and two other people were riding.

He was released from the El Paso County Jail after posting $25,000 bail, according to court records. He was later ordered to serve five years of probation and pay a $5,000 fine.

Houma-Thibodaux residents showed support for Robinson when news of his latest arrest surfaced on social media Tuesday.

“Praying for you Greg,” a commenter said on Facebook. “I hope you get the help you need to get pass this evil. I'm not here to judge you. I will definitely say prayers for you young man keep your head up you're not the first and you won't be the last but you can change.”

“Maybe this is what it’s going to take to save his life,” said another. “God allows things to happen for our own good. … I hope he realizes that one day.”

Robinson was booked into the Lafourche Parish jail, where he remains on $315,000 bail

One of the league’s longtime assistants has decided to hang it up.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Rod Marinelli has decided to retire.

Marinelli, 72, was most recently the Raiders’ defensive line coach for the last two seasons. He also served as the club’s interim defensive coordinator late in the 2020 season after Las Vegas fired Paul Guenther. He stuck around under new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley in 2021.

Marinelli began his time in the league as the Buccaneers defensive line coach in 1996 and was with the organization through the 2005 season. He was Detroit’s head coach from 2006-2008, presiding over the team’s 0-16 season.

He then worked for the Bears and Cowboys before reuniting with Jon Gruden in Las Vegas.

First-time head coach Matt Eberflus is filling out his staff, having hired his 15th assistant coach since taking the job. On Wednesday, the Bears announced the hiring of David Walker as the team’s new running backs coach.

Walker, 52, boasts 25 years of coaching experience, including seven in the NFL as a running backs coach with the Colts (2011-14) and Lions (2016-18). He last coached at any level in 2018.

Walker announced on Jan. 29, 2019, that he was stepping away from coaching to pursue other opportunities. But the coaching bug apparently caught up to him.

The Bears have hired Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator, Alan Williams as defensive coordinator and Richard Hightower as special teams coordinator.

The team also has announced the hirings of Andrew Janocko (quarterbacks), Tyke Tolbert (receivers/passing game coordinator), Jim Dray (tight ends), Chris Morgan (offensive line), Travis Smith (defensive line), Dave Borgonzi (linebackers), James Rowe (defensive backs), Austin King (assistant offensive line), Tim Zetts (assistant tight ends), David Overstreet II (assistant defensive backs) and Omar Young (offense quality control).

That's good because he didn't have a clue what to do with the run game.
