Former Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel making position switch
Jeff Driskel started three games under center for the Lions a couple years ago, and now he’s changing positions with the Houston Texans.
Jeff Driskel has made the rounds since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. The Cincinnati Bengals picked him up that year after he was waived, then stuck around there long enough to playing in nine games (starting five) for the Bengals in 2018.
Driskel landed with the Lions after the season started in 2019. When Matthew Stafford suffered a back injury at the midpoint of the that season he started three games, completing 59 percent of his passes with four touchdowms and four interceptions along with 151 rushing yards and a touchdown on the ground. He also caught a pass.
Driskel moved on to the Denver Broncos in 2020, making one start with three games appeared in. He moved on again, to the Houston Texans, where hasn’t seen action in a game this season. At least for now.
Jeff Driskel will change positions according to Aaron Reiss of The Athletic, Driskel will move to tight end for the Texans.
According to Reiss, Texans tight ends coach Andy Bischoff said Driskel could contribute on special teams. In terms of when he might be active for a game, Bischoff said “We’re more looking at this as a developmental process.” Reiss added that Driskel is already a full time tight end/special teamer.
When was at the University of Florida, Driskel drew unfair and strained comparisons to Tim Tebow before finishing his college career at Louisiana Tech in 2015 (4,026 passing yards, 62.3 percent completion rate, 27 touchdowns, eight interceptions). At 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, size and athleticism (however shown in brief flashes) were not an issue in his lack of development as a quarterback. As noted by Pro Football Talk, he ran a 4.56 40-yard dash at the 2016 NFL Combine.
Good for Driskel to realize his opportunities to be an NFL quarterback have practically run out, and being willing to try another position when an opportunity presented itself. Maybe he can find a way to stick in the league as a tight end.

The Tennessee Titans waived running back Adrian Peterson on Tuesday, three weeks after signing the former league MVP.
They also signed veteran wide receiver Golden Tate to their practice squad.

Report: Jaguars interviewing Jim Caldwell on Tuesday

The Jaguars are continuing to get a head start on their head coaching search in Week 18.
According to Eugene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union, the Jaguars are interviewing former Colts and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell on Tuesday.
Frenette reports the interview is taking place in person at an undisclosed location outside Jacksonville. The Jaguars interviewed former Eagles coach Doug Pederson in the same manner last week.
Caldwell, 66, compiled a 26-22 record in three seasons as the Colts head coach from 2009-2011 and a 36-38 record as the Lions’ head coach from 2014-2017. Detroit went 9-7 in each of Caldwell’s last two seasons with the team.
The Jaguars are also slated to speak with Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles this week, though that interview will be conducted remotely.
Green Bay offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will likely be interviewed by the team next week. The Packers have a bye for the first round of the postseason.

Matt Prater named NFC special teams player of the week

The Cardinals got back in the win column after three consecutive losses.
Kicker Matt Prater played a significant role in the victory and now he’s been named NFC special teams player of the week.
Prater connected on all four of his field-goal attempts, from 24, 53, 26, and 38 yards. He also scored an extra point in Arizona’s 25-22 win over Dallas.
According to the NFL, Prater now has 14 career special teams player of the week awards over his long career. He also earned one this season in Week Six.
Prater and the Cardinals have clinched a playoff spot. But if they beat the Seahawks and the Rams lose to the 49ers, they’ll win the NFC West. If Los Angles wins, Arizona will be the NFC’s No. 5 seed.

Kellen Moore to interview with Jaguars Friday night
Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore will not wait until the end of the regular season to speak to the Jaguars about their head coaching vacancy.
According to multiple reports, Moore will interview with the Jaguars on Friday night. A change to NFL procedures this year allows for teams without head coaches to interview candidates from other teams over the final two weeks of the regular season as long as the candidates’ current employers consent to the conversation.
Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich is also set to interview with Jacksonville Friday. Doug Pederson, Jim Caldwell, and Todd Bowles have already spoken to the team and they’re set to talk to Bill O’Brien and Nathaniel Hackett next week.
Moore is in his third year as the Cowboys offensive coordinator. He was on the Eagles’ interview list before they hired Nick Sirianni last year.
